Got a 2023 60s LP standard, not a fan of the 61 BB’s..any symour duncan suggestions? Seens to boil down to pearly gates/seth lovers/antiquities (looking for the more beefy open sound, but still want that grit when overdriven and cut thru), The 61’s really dont shine on the bridge imo, neck isnt bad..but i feel like i could swap the pups and make that guitar sound much better.

Good video - but people don’t be afraid to get your own sound! The thing i don’t understand is when somebody wants to sound like something from 60 years ago - they are good, but don’t be afraid to do a sound that isn’t like anything else… maybe someday in 60 years people will want your tone!

I’ve a set of THROBAK 101 SLE humbuckers and they TRANSFORMED MY NEW 60s les paul std and I will never part with that guitar.

I heard a story that i believe has more than a grain of truth in it, that is the coil winding operator would start the machine, roll and smoke his cigarette, stop the machine and hey presto there's your pickup all wound and ready to go. Apparently this is the reason for the inconsistency in pickup output

It's the sound of rock n roll. Cause sorry, it sure as hell ain't a strat, tele, p-90 or other single coil pickup.

"Alnico II is slightly scooped in comparison to Alnico V." Is an untrue statement. All things being equal Alnico V's are more scooped sounding than Alnico II. Especially in a P.A.F. style pickup. The difference is not slight either: aside from a softer, spongier attack and feel AII has considerable more mids, rounder lows and softer highs than AV (which, aside from a more direct and immediate attack and feel, has more strident highs, punchier bass and recessed mids. On a side note: a lot of original P.A.F.'s that have been examined and tested properly have an Alnico IV magnet.

Thank you so much for this amazing explanatory video. I’m surprised to “see” the tonal dynamic range provided by PAFs. I believe it’s not as much as you can get with a single coil, but we can do a lot. More than 10 years ago my first choice of pickups was JB/59… after watching this review I want a pair of unwaxed PAFs in a LesPaul. I assume I’ll have to relearn how to play guitar, specially in front of a >30 watts amp moving air around the room. This is gonna be interesting 🧐

Rhett I've gotta say Wow! Your content just keeps me coming back for more each time. I love the colabs with Rick Beato and others, but your gear history makes me "geek out" real bad. Lol. I just picked up a used LP with Pro buckers that are spec'd to original PAF's. When I was first starting out I was more into searing leads instead of "good clean sound". Now many years later my tastes have changed and I'm liking this PAF thing everyone raved about. Awesome video and excellent history lesson for me. 🎸

Why oh why oh why is the pickup output referenced in ohms winch is the dc resistance rather than millivolts
It drives me nuts when peeps say it has an 'output' of 7.2kOhms.....

The PAF has a smooth top end in the bridge position. There’s no harshness. You don’t have to distort the crap out of it to get a somewhat raspy presentation. It’s like a baritone singer who smokes too mush.

If you are on somewhat of a budget, the DiMarzio 36th Anniversary PAF is awesome.

I guess if you want the PAF tone on the cheap just get a low output humbucker thats microphonic. With alnico magnets of course. I've had good luck getting this sound from "lawsuit guitars" and vintage low cost humbuckers from the 70's/80's. They tend to be low output and microphonic like PAFs. I have a 1975 Ibanez ES-175 copy. The pickups have the steel braided wires like PAFs. The output is 7.7k bridge and 7.9k neck. They have this very jangly almost single coil like tone. Especially when I'm using both pickups together. But when you hit them hard with distortion, defintiley humbuckers. They're very touch sensitive. My point is basically that you can get the PAF tone relatively cheap. A lot of boutique companies charge hundreds per pickup. That's great if you want an exact reproduction. If you just want the basic sound, pay $30 a set or so on ebay.

I'm an engineer with a total of zero patents. Even though I don't have any, I'm familiar with them. The reason the pickups say "Patent Applied For" and many other products now will say "patent pending" is due to the grueling process the US patent office has to go through before they'll issue a patent. First, they'll split a device into mechanical, aesthetic and electric/electronic categories if necessary, and send the blueprints and patent application off to those experts. Experts in each category have to verify that the device is not patented already, they have to not encroach into an already patented device, and they have to have patentable aspects that align with the language the applicant wrote to describe it. Needless to say, it takes a long time. They've gotten better but it's still very difficult and time consuming. If they get it wrong there's a lot at stake and lawsuits will start flying. That's why patent applied for and patent pending are commonly seen on products. I will say that I'm glad Gibson wrote "patent applied for" and not "patent pending", because everything else says parent pending! PAF is much better than PP also!

Building a LP from a kit; going to put SD Whole Lotta Humbuckers in it and wire it 59 style with the woman tone capacitor set-up.
