Less industrialization = less work = less people
Dense industrialization (the northeast for example) means more jobs all in one spot. Which leads to more people wanting to live there which leads to more businesses showing up because there's more people and so on and so forth. Most folks don't wanna drive 2 hrs to work EACH WAY, so they find work closer to home which makes them less likely to live in remote areas.

One thing, the Empty North is 100 times better than living in a city like Atlanta with hoodlums on every corner, getting short in traffic and having to walk your kids two doors down for a play date! I’ll take it any day!

Big reasons. The west like most if Washington is owned by the government. BLM,DNR,USFS, DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR, PARKS DEPARTMENT, WILDLIFE REFUGE AND WILDERNESS AREAS, RESERVATIONS. IN my area in the cascades of eastern Washington there's mostly rugged steep mountains, arid desert and few roads. The government owns 83% of chelan and Okanagan County 😮

There are some nice properties with big old farmhouse or farm ranch house with acerage and animals. Many people are snatching up the log cabins and what not. But true not overly populated

I have lived in Northeastern Minnesota my entire life (51 years) & I stayed here because it's not as crazy as the Twin Cities metro area. Yes, it gets crazy cold here - but you get used to it & it rarely keeps people at home. Life goes on no matter what temperature it is or how much snow is falling.
I live in St Louis County & just our one county is so big that it's bigger than several northeastern states - thankfully it's not the same population in that space!

I assume the map is trying to go around Duluth, but there's not a notch to the tip of Lake Superior because the city of Duluth is located on the water. Duluth is about 40+ square miles & the Lakeshore is included.

its funny too. since most that area is also we alot of the more illegal shit happens for tree chopping and ore extracting but as of about 20 years back. the governments giving insentives to move up into the mid north of the USA. government sees how shits becoming a mega city time line and some states have no power due to no one living there.

btw the empty north would be a natural freezer for electronics aka servers... so ironiclly the empty north could be come a natural tech hub that could rival hot ass southern california

Fun fact: All parts of modern day Montana that fall west of the Great Continental Divide used to be strictly Idaho territory until territorial politicians in Idaho were bought out, and Montana stole places like Missoula, Thompson Falls, and half of Glacier National Park. So always remember; The prettiest parts of Montana are actually stolen Idaho.

The safest place in the USA is the most northern and slightly more west of your border in Washington State. I was surprised you didn't mention most of this region is considered the nuclear sponge and will absorb most of the damage if it would ever come to that situation. That's the reason I stay out given the times we live in.

No one even lives up there, yet the US government couldn't help themselves but kill or force Native people onto reservations. Couldn't just let them be and live their lives or recognize their wrong today and give the land back. Is there any entity that's more evil than the US government? They're the good guys now though. The Amish will fill up the whole area in the next hundred years. At their current birth rate in 200 years, there will be 300 million Amish in the U.S. They are buying up all the land in Indiana where I live and reproducing at a rate or 7 or 8 children per family.
