I see no problem at all with shutting yourself in a castle for 50 years. He was a man before his time I say

Marie Antoinette wasn't actually completely silent at the end. Her last words were (translated from french, so potential paraphrasing) "I'm so sorry, I did not mean to do it." when she accidentally stepped on the executioner's toe in that purple slipper. I love these games only for the history stuff in it, mostly the stuff that is anecdotal at best or has almost nothing to do with the actual mystery, or at least the solution.

Elisabeth Louise Vigee Lebrun is one of my favorite painters. I've had the pleasure of seeing her self-portrait in person. She was a court painter for Queen Antoinette and painted several of her portraits. She wrote in her diary once that when she dropped her brushes, she was surprised that the Queen insisted on helping her pick them up. She escaped France with her daughter to avoid being beheaded. She later returned to France and painted Napolean's sister. She didn't like her very much because she changed clothes and jewelry for every portrait session and rarely made openings in her schedule for the sessions.

It was towards the end so im not too annoyed but I dont like how someone just outright spoiled that the professor isnt the culprit. Figuring out who you want to trust is part of the fun of these games

Do the responses Nancy gives to the people- like being rude when they ask her to do their chores for them- impact the ending or something? like are you more likely to lose the villain if you chose the impolite response?

I think the idea of the castle having strange architecture was inspired by the Winchester Mystery House. In the late 1800s, Sarah Winchester lost her newborn daughter and husband and allegedly consulted a medium who told her that she was being haunted by the soldiers who were killed by the Winchester rifle that her father-in-law invented. She was told that the spirits wanted her to move out west, build a house, and never stop building. The Winchester House is massive and has staircases that lead into the ceiling, hallways filled with fireplaces, and an infamous door that leads to a two story drop on the outside of the house. No one knows exactly why she kept building the house or why its architecture is so strange.

Edit: Fuck, I wish I would watch the entire video before writing a comment.

One of my favourite PC games growing up! Love watching Gab Smolder's playthroughs. She's very clever, good at problem solving, and sharp when running through these games. I wouldn't doubt Gab has an IQ of 140 or more.

Bit of history nerdery: Joseph Guillotin did not invent the guillotine. That dubious honour goes to Antoine Louis, and the machine was in fact originally known as a louisette or louison. Guillotin played a pivotal role in the passing of a law that required all executions to be performed by machine and that's how his name got attached to it. Before this law, beheading by machine, which was considered the least painful way to be executed, was mostly reserved for nobles.

The main reason I don't like this game so much is that they could so easily talk about the real Marie-Antoinette and the complexities of her being both a born and bred noble, but was never prepared to become a queen, and her being the co-creator of the 'little white dress' because she was fine with simpler things. Or people hating on her so much because that's what they normally did with the king's mistresses... except Louis XVI never took any mistresses. She wasn't a queen for the people or their downfall. Instead we get this weirdly informed, progressive, prophetic, angelic Marie-Antoinette. But I guess without that we wouldn't have a lost honking diamond and thus no mystery :P

Gab: 3 and 6 AM?? AM??? What is she DOING???

me: probably what my mom did for a while before passing. Falls asleep around 7pm, woke up at 3am (her job didnt even start til 8) so she "has a few hours to myself before I get started with my day" -- I do this myself a bit, sometimes. Its nice to just exist without rushing ❤

About the Winchester house, it wasn't that construction took a long time, but rather that she paid to have construction going 24/7 for the rest of her life. After her husband and child passed away in quick succession, she contacted a medium (or vice versa). The medium told her she was being haunted by the people unalived by the Winchester rifle and that she would share the fate of her family if she didn't move to California and keep construction going on a house continuously. Which is why most of the construction doesn't make sense, because there wasn't really that much of a plan gone into it.

God the end of this one was painful. Not even a second given for thought before chat is backseating answers. "No, you can trust [1/4 characters that could be the bad guy.]" and the instant "you need to signal for help."

Jesus people are awful at not spoiling things in games.
