Good explanation of depth of field. It's not always talked about when comparing full frame and APS-C. Something I didn't realize when I jumped from Super 35mm to Full Frame and shooting at f1.4 and f1.2. It is definitely noticeable depth of field. But for those who are invested in lots of APS-C glass, the FX-30 is a great option. I finally stopped shooting crop sensors this year and I'm enjoying the look and feel of full frame for both video and photos.

Hahah I’m a DBAG who likes shallow depth of field! I felt that!

I shoot on a A6500 and always hear people trashing on APS-C cameras, I have the Sigma trio, the tamron 17-70- and 70-180 2.8 Zooms and get get results I am happy with as a hobbyist , i cant get as shallow depth of field but you use what you have. Nice to know if i need it for some filming I can rent the FX30 and use all my current gear

when you start shooting short films like myself super 35 is the best thing for us! Especially with the reds we use.

You'll never come across any filmmaker saying an Arri Alexa Mini is a bad camera. If it's good enough for Roger Deakins it's good enough for 99.99999% of videographers who shoot digital. Cost isn't even that big a factor these days to rent especially if you know what you're shooting and want to create.

Also shallow DOF in most cases is a crutch for creatures who don't scout for good locations. If you were in a beautiful location would you blur it to oblivion? Probably not.

I always reference Sails Chong who regularly shoots at F11, F16, F22, etc. on medium format.

"Location Scouting" is by far the biggest weakness for modern photographer's and videographers.

He regularly shoots stopped down even up to F22, b/c he chooses good locations.

For those like me who are APSC Sony shooters for video, we all dreamed of having 4k 60 and 4k 120. It took a long time but we finally got it and it has a fan so it doesn't overheat. 🔥
With regards to depth of field, the sigma trio 1.4's and all the aspc offers enough depth of field to get a cinematic look, they are amazingly sharp, light and portable. Is there a difference, yes but it's so marginal that I doesn't really matter in the real world.
Great video buddy, well done 🎉🎉🎉

Just came across your page today. Love the flow and also love your perspective. I shoot with A7IV as only camera. Turning more towards video though I still do photos. I am needing a second camera as for more jobs are requesting it and I was glad I had waited. I could obviously use another full frame like FX3 which I had eye on. But I am so used to shooting in 4k60 crop that it does not bother me at all buying an APC.

I really agree with you on even professionals can use this in their bag…it is far from an entry level videographer if they don’t know anything about settings and frame rates their footage will still look like crap.

I also use my Sigma 14-24 2.8 a lot ! With the specs you listed, this lens does wonders for me in cropped mode for A7Iv. I bought for real estate purposes and now have used it a lot in my reels for gyms, and even weddings I’ve shot a whole wedding with it before in cropped mode 4k60 as they were on a 4 hour lower budget I stuck with this lens and my drone and I got perfect results for focal length and lower light.

So we’ll done on this review, I pre ordered mine and looking forward to adding it as my BCam !

Super 35 - who needs more? If it’s been perfectly fine for the majority of cinema for the last 100 years!

The dof is faster to explain that the only things that affect it is distance focal length and fstop. Sensor size doesn't change depth of field. Reducing the focal length or stepping back to make an "equivalent shot" is what makes the dof change

The brand new - and very expensive - Alexa 35 has their first new sensor in 12 years- and it is Super 35 in size! ($80,000 too). So Super 35 is far from a 'toy' size (though I have always felt MFT sensors were a bit too limiting) .... I have a full frame DSLR/mirrorless and rarely shoot wide open- very few times do I desire that narrow a DOF...

Wait, so I understand if the depth of field equivalent "Result" is different based on the crop factor for APSC vs. FF.
But the Light gathering is the same? For example f2.8 in APSC Lenses will also get the same low light "Result" as the f2.8 FF Lenses?

I just sold my a6600 and wondering if I should get FX30 or Full frame. Because the light gathering is really kinda a deal breaker for me.

A problem with reviewing a camera purely from specs is that it just isn't everything. ZV-E10 for example has 1080p@60 and 120fps which sounds great on paper. However the fullhd quality from that camera is just utter garbage and even worse than the 1080p from the Zv1 for example.

I love my APS-C a6400 and I just bought the New 11mm f1.4 which from what I've seen looks AMAZING on the a6400 and I still have my Sigma 16mm f1.4 BUT I might switch that too either the Sony 10mm-20mm f4 or the Sigma 18-50mm or the Tamron equivalent. The FX30 is going to replace my a6400 as my Video Camera for the One All to Be all because the A7S III is beyond my reach cause the A7C was my go too until THIS camera Came out, Nice explanation

I really like this video. As i shoot Photo and video on Sony a6500 and i feel sometimes i feel the pressure to go full frame. Realistically though it's actually more than i need at the moment with the work that I'm doing and I'm able to match that look even in low light a lot of the time. Only thing id say i do want is dual card slots 🤷‍♂️

If you have a lot full frame lenses you can also use a speedbooster so you dont have to necessarily have to buy new lenses for your apsc camera.

I shoot everything at f5.6-f8 as i want more in focus than just one eye. Most movies are not shot faster than 2.8 on a super35(apsc ) sensor which is f4 on full frame. The bokee obsession comes from the photography world. A fx30 is more than good enough for most people.

love this channel and how real you keep it Vu. I saved money buying the fx30 instead of the fx3. I film a lot of football so all i did was switch to my sony 24-105 from the 70-200 and that fixed everything filming with that crop sensor. Same thing with basketball I film with the sigma f2.8 24-70 and switched to the 16-35mm. problems solved

Love the available apsc glass. I already had the sigma 16mm,23,Mm, 30mm, and 56mm f1.4 lenses before I got the fx30

I also had the tamron 11-20 and 17-70 f2.8s. I used these with my old a6400 and woth my A7IV bodies. It’s so nice to carry light fast primes. And they help with the low light 💡 as well.

Quick question: which battery brand would you recommend for the FX 30 ? I read a review on SmallRig battery, and they said FX-30 doesn’t allow 3rd party batteries. Should I get an original Sony battery or third party is fine and if so, which brand would you recommend ?
Thank you.

I’m glad you mentioned working with primes and the temptation to zoom in and out on zoom lenses.
We’re all guilty of it, but I definitely resonate with that struggle. I find when I’m stuck on a prime. I work so much better.
