They also forgot to tell armorers that not all parts from M16's are interchangeable with M4's. Every M4 in my unit on the second tour, would fail to extract and cause double feeds and overrides, bent up few gas tubes clearing those weapons.

The problem? "CLEAN YOUR WEAPON" nah just kidding. The armorer put M16A3/4 extractors in the M4. Yep, they fit, nope they won't extract. the M4 has a gold spring not a blue one or a red one.

The XM177 and CAR15 buttstock is non-adjustable, only collapsible. There are only 2 position notches, fully extended and fully retracted. Also, the flash hider was to help the rifle cycle because the AR platform is direct impingement and therefore a drop in pressure at the gas port causes major reliability issues, the flash hider has a gas expansion chamber in it for this purpose. Sounding like an AK is just a happy side effect. Also, enemies can easily tell an AK report from an AR, just from the different rate of fire between these rifles.

The Colt M4 was a quality piece. It just starts having issues when it's been fired so many times that the black finish has worn off and the shiny aluminum finish is all you see.

I have a PSA AR in a mid length system. I was going to buy in bulk eventually for my family and am glad to hear that even the military prefers the mid length system.

I’ve put WAY more than 6k rounds through my personal M4 and it still shoots like I just took it out of the box. Maybe that’s because I’ve taken meticulous care of it. I can certainly tell the difference between it and the ones we were issued overseas though.

If the M4 was the same as the M16 they wouldn't have changed the designation. It would be M16C or something.

Why doesn’t the military keep the M16 and the M4? Both fit different mission profiles: M16 for longer range engagements and M4 for CQC. I get the switch to the spear from the AR platform to a certain extent and not what I’m referring to. What I mean is they never kept the carbine in service with the rifle. Sure they had the M16 in service with support personnel, but it still makes no sense to me that they ditched the M16A4 for the less accurate M4. They should have been complimentary

We should have adopted the fal instead of the m14. We would likely not be having this conversation if that had happened. We more than likely would have modernized the fal a couple of times and still be using it by now.

i remember for a while there was some talk about ordering HK416 uppers. then my battalion talked about getting daniel defense uppers.
yeah a lot of things never happened but when we did finally get the new FN M4s, it was like christmas. except we were pretty late to the game so it felt more like getting your older brother's christmas present your parents lost and forgot about.

I have a question do you have any Trigger Time behind an M4 or shoot guns regularly at all 90% of malfunctions or jams you're talking about are caused by worn-out magazines the U.S. military does not want to replace magazines regularly at least the U.S. Marine Corps now uses new magpul gen 3 pmags. The reliability definitely improved when using not worn-out mags.

It has only to do with sorry ass G.I.'s cleaning/maintenance. Absent a breakage. These weapons do not fail. Ask top tier guys. In battlescope, it is the only weapon that will go where my ass is on the line.

In 10,000 rounds or so, I've never had a single failure with any of my three Colt M4's, but then again I constantly retire old magazines and keep the rifles (relatively) clean. Maybe taking care of your shit is important after all.

You got your thumbnail wrong. In 1967 the only rifle of that type in existence was the M16A1. It had a full stock, a carry handle made as part of the upper receiver, and a 20" barrel. The military was still using the M16A1 in 1977 and well beyond. I used one in the USMC in 1977. There was no M4 back then. It is a very recent development. We didn't even have the M16A2 until the mid '80s, and it still had a 20" barrel. I am not a fan of the M4 other than for special operations. With it's 14.5" barrel it is little more than a handgun. It is only accurate at extremely close range. The military needs an actual rifle.

M4 is still one of the lightest rifles. It matters when when you tack on all the new equipment. They just need to update to a newer free floating rail and I don’t see a reason to replace it with another rifle.
