Retiring in Japan: Closing a Year of Monumental Change

🇯🇵 Emily and Tatsuya joined us today from Tokyo to help close out 2024—a year that marked the most significant transition of our lives.

This year, Yumiko and I made our final move from the USA to Japan, a journey we’ve undertaken five times before but never with such difficulty. The sheer expense, effort, and emotional toll consumed all of 2024 and much of 2023, made even more challenging by our age.

In our youth, moving between countries felt like a sprint. Now, it’s a marathon, demanding everything—body, spirit, and mind. This was the last time we’ll make such a transition, and Japan will now be our home for the rest of our lives. Future visits to the USA will only be as tourists, and likely very infrequent.

I’ve come to understand that the will and capacity for great change are perishable. I’m profoundly grateful we made this move before that capacity expired and embraced it fully while we still could. This marks the conclusion of our #GreatLifeAdventure of international transitions, and I feel immense gratitude for the strength we had to run this race one last time.
