To this day, Solar Striker is my go-to gameboy game.

GameBoy technically wasn't ALL there was in 1989... the Atari Lynx came out in September of that year. too bad for Atari that the system ran through batteries like Kleenex at a snot party, was too damned expensive by comparison, had no addictive pack-in game like Tetris, and not a very strong library overall.

Growing up I never liked portable systems, the experience seemed totally inferior to me. But then... Pokemon Blue for Game Boy Colour. Changed my whole vibe, as good as anything on a console.

Alice in Wonderland for the Game Boy Color might be one of the most beautiful games I've ever played.

I had the magnifying glass accessory for my gameboy, which had a light too. That helped quite a bit

One very underrated game is called Spu vs Spy for GBC, it’s based on the MAD magazine (Not the operation booby trap, I mean the one that’s split screen).

Some of the games I first had with gameboy color were pokemon yellow,bugs bunny crazy castle 3,earthworm jim 2,shadowgate.Alot of nostalgia,sometimes having to blow into the cartridges to make them work

I just recently started collecting original gameboy and gameboy color games. I never owned either growing up as my first system was the gameboy advance. I've had to do all my collecting online and mostly off of ebay. Unfortunately, there are no local retro stores where I live. The closest thing I have is a gamestop the next town over which is about a 45 minute drive and this is gamestop so it's a 50/50 shot of them actually having anything worthwhile.

Other than that, there is technically thrift stores, yard sales and the flea market as options but my local thrift stores rarely carry video games. Out of date computer systems, inkjet printers and old vhs tapes yes. But rarely ever games. Yard sales mostly just have clothing and furniture so no luck there. And it's hard for me to trust the flea market to carrying working products. I've gotten burned at the two local flea markets lately.

So, given all that, does anyone have any advice for me when it comes to collecting since I pretty much have to do mine all online for the foreseeable future?

Holy crap I had no idea what a large man John Riggs is. I love his videos but somehow never noticed how big he is until seeing him dwarf Metal Jesus, who isnt a small guy himself.

Only idea I've heard of are car boot sales, and they're only really a thing in the summer - and one day a week (that's if it isn't cancelled due to rain!)

I’m not exaggerating when I say there’s probably only a dozen or so games on the Gameboy that are worth playing today. Donkey Kong 94 and Mole Mania are the two that come to mind.

Was going through my collection the other day. Had a link cable sitting on top of a third party screen magnifier. I pulled the link cable off, it was fine, but the magnifier had cord-shaped burn/melt indentations in it! Not sure if the cord paint is toxic or the magnifier is made out of cheap plastic? Was not expecting it!

There is one game worth playing on the OG GB and that’s Mole Mania. That game is dope and really doesn’t suffer from how bad the GB is.

Here is my personal feelings and story about the Gameboy.

I grew up with the Gameboy and got one from a foreign exchange student who was living with us in the early 90s (apparently her father actually worked at Nintendo). I played the hell out of it like most kids my age did. When I graduated high school at the end of the decade, I was packing up all my stuff with one exception: my Gameboy stuff. For the first and only time, I took all those games and put them in a Goodwill bag. I think, for the most part, the Gameboy was something you played not really for fun but to past time. In fact, my experience with the Gameboy was so negative that it put me off of handheld gaming for years. I didn’t own a handheld system until the Switch came out. After I got that, I had this epiphany that “yeah, maybe some of those later handhelds had some worthwhile games”. And yeah, there were.

But yeah, my relationship with Gameboy has been a complicated one. I think it was ubiquitous in its time but for the most part, I think the games were not very good. It did puzzle games well but that’s about it. I hate love you Gameboy. Gameboy Color, I hardly knew ye.

You skipped gameboy light

DMGameboy has now taken over 90% of my gameplay. I pulled out my 1991 GB-80 Gameboy case and had 8 games with manuals. Got the case and the Gameboy with Tetris and Super Mario Land on my 11th birthday 1991. The other 6 games I got over time for Christmas or Birthdays were: Super Mario Land 2 & 3, Double Dragon, Turtles the Fall of the Foot Clan, Castlevania Adventure and Ninja Gaiden Shadow. I have now been buying up games and reproduction boxes and Manuals. Getting ready to get my Analogue Pocket Q1 2022! I think my top 3 favorite handhelds are in this order: DMGameboy, Switch OLED, 3DS.
