The Battle of Jutland in World War 1 saw German and British dreadnoughts in a fierce and inconclusive battle, which ended up being the largest naval battle of the first world war. Following WWI, the German fleet was interned at Scapa Flow under British watch, awaiting the outcome of peace negotiations, amidst ongoing internal German political turmoil and revolutionary fervor. Rear Admiral Ludwig von Reuter issued a secret order to scuttle the German fleet on June 21, 1919, to prevent the ships from falling into Allied hands, resulting in the deliberate sinking of 74 ships. The scuttling created international controversy, with mixed reactions from the Allies and prolonged detainment of the German crews, while the Treaty of Versailles imposed further severe restrictions on Germany.
