Perga, with a history spanning 6000 years, grew to become the fourth-largest city in the Roman Empire, and is today renowned for its well-preserved classical buildings and lush surroundings. From Persian loyalty to Alexander the Great's liberation and Roman patronage, Perga's golden ages saw the construction of important religious buildings that make it a center first of Greco-Roman religion, then Christianity under the Byzantines, earning it visits from St. Paul and St. Barnabas. Notable figures in Perga's history include mathematician Apollonius, Plancia Magna, a powerful woman of her time, and Matrona of Perge, a 6th-century saint.
