I always wondered about this strategy, coating the base in a deceptive exterior! You're probably right that where you put it is key. Maybe it's best used as a loot transfer base, so all the heat gets focused on an obvious base while you make moves.

I remember a time i had on rust console me and two of my brothers were playing on a monthly server one of my brothers had just gotten the game and was learning how to play the whole day while he was trying to learn this one asshole kept coming over to attack us he tried to raid my brother multiple times dont know how much sulphur he wasted just trying and then when we went to raid him it took us all of the whole night we were on to not only gather enough sulphur for satchels but to also learn said satchels and then progress using that took even longer it felt all in all it took us i believe a total of 16 hours from the whole day to not only perform the raid but to prepare for the raid itself we were fresh no BPs and had three bases to live off of built relatively in the same area as a sort of village the biggest base being the worthless one well anyways after we get to the dudes base to raid it everyone kept questioning me on the whole thing because i knew for some reason the man left all his doors open i swear to god i felt it in my biggest toe my intuition on this was like that so we raided past his first set of doors and lo an behold wouldn't you know it every single door all the way to core and even every loot room was laid open and available for any sniffing noses to come aling and take what they want

This is an extremely solid theory tbh, I've always done that and I've gone months of wipes without my base being raided. I work a lot so I don't go on for long or often but my bases normally hang around
