Will the new model be even uglier?

One of the most versatile mid sized trucks ever built. Reliable, well made, easy to maintain, lots of aftermarket parts, really by 2023 it’s a rolling work of art…

I am impressed by your fore thought & evaluation. I am not easy to please because I was and am still not impressed with technology in general but that being said I know from experience, ASE certified, State licensed (Sacramento State College) wastewater operator Class 2 & wastewater mechanic Class 3 & state licensed and formally trained (Sacramento State) State certified smog test and repair technician that a lot of the new technology was & is good for air quality but there must be caution with direct injection because of excessive carbon build up when in the chamber the non-PEA gas additives cannot do their job in the compression chamber. Adding a gas additive that has PEA would help reduce carbon build in the chamber. Hopefully other vehicle owners will consider the benefits of seeking understanding as you have so professionally expressed.

I’ve heard you say that about the engine sounding like a diesel at idle in a video before too. I have a 2021 Tacoma TRD Sport with the V6 with 16,500 miles on it and I’ve never heard it sound like that at idle or any other time. I always let it idle for about 5 minutes after starting it before taking in on the road.

All of the things that you mentioned in this video are exactly why I bought a 2023 4x4 instead of waiting for the new 2024 model. Moreover, the fact that Toyota went to a 4 cylinder turbo was it for me. I keep my vehicles long-term, and turbo engines just don't last as long.

I just traded in a Subaru Outback wilderness for a 23 trd off road earlier in the week and I love how simple and old school this truck is. Not a lot of tech like the Subaru but everything just works like it should. I never realized the drum brakes when I was walking around it.

I think the fact that they're updating the 3rd gen Tacoma before the 4Runner just shows that Toyota knows they pretty much phoned it in. I truly think that the 3.5 engine was merely a placeholder and that they knew they were going with the 2.4 the whole time.

I was in the market recently for a mid size truck. I looked at the Ranger XL 2.4L, 4 cylinder 2X4 at about $38K...Then the Tacoma 3.5 V6 4X4 TRD Off Road with many more amenities at $41K
It was a no brainer, I went with the Tacoma

This old school feel is exactly why I just purchased a 2023 TRD Off Road model. I don’t want s bunch of fancy gizmos. Didn’t know about the service bulletin for an auxiliary fan. I live in the Central Valley of California. It’s not uncommon to have multiple days where it’s over 100 degrees

I'm a subscriber and a big fan of your channel. Also, being a professional mechanic I think it means a lot by saying this, and thatI lean a lot from your content. However, I don't agree with some of what you're saying about this truck, and what you've omitted, and to a degree that its concerning.

I have a 3rd Gen Tacoma, and i know first hand that this truck has a good deal of systemic problems in its design, and that these are very much abnormal in the automobile world, although Toyota says there normal because almost half of them exhibit these problems. (what an inverted stance). Ask Toyota to fix these and after they make a failed attempt they claim it's characteristic of the vehicle.

All you have to do is Google things like "Tacoma vibration issues" or "2GR Ticking" and you have more reading than you an absorb, and thats only two subjects. yes the engine is noisy, but it's not acceptable to tolerate lifter noise in a modern automotive engine. That amounts to poor quality control. I'm not talking about all 24 valves being noisy, just one or two loud enough that you can hear it over the overwhelming road noise with windows up, as if it has 250,000 miles on it loud. Not Ok for a new vehicle owner.

Drum brakes are stupid in 2023. The biggest problem with drum brakes is that they lock too easily. It's a terrifying situation to have a rear wheel lock up when you're in heavy braking in a pick up. Being so light in the rear, if you're on a sweeping turn (like a highway exit ramp) and you need to suddenly brake and the high side wheel locks its very unsettling.

Overall the truck is great looking, and not bad to drive. I love the rear wheel drive, and most of the 90's technology, except for the electronics in the 4x4 controls, and also for the other amenities, but with the noted issues, poor fuel economy, and the overall cheapness in the build its not a top competitor. That and Toyotas lack of integrity in remedying those problems makes this a poor choice.

I would have expected you were more upfront about in your review.

an easy fix for the transmission issue is one of those pedal comanders. its not a trans issue its an ECU issue. its like the drive by wire cant communicate with the trans very well. i did this and havent notice it since.

If you don't have proper condenser coil cooling, ALL compressors will FAIL prematurely and the ac system will not work effectively. 100% Toyota should put in an auxiliary colling fan from the factory

I have a 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport. I love it so much. I wouldn’t dream of turning it in. My transmission had a few recalls where I had to take it in nothing major. At times I do feel the trans searching but it doesn’t bother me. What failed in my Tacoma is in AC, the evap coil. As you said I found out from a technician that it’s a know issue for the evap coil to fail. Praise The Lord I picked up the extended warranty it would have been a $2800 cost. I live in Hawaii where pretty much everyone drives a Tacoma and my AC has always not cooled the truck like other cars/trucks.

I have a 2018 Sport and I LOVE it. Best vehicle I ever bought. I want to buy another one, as in one in addition to this one, now that I'm retired and it can be my "retirement" vehicle. I'd LOVE a manual, but I see they are only offering a manual in THREE of the eight or so models. Quite disappointing. I also wanted an access cab, and none are offered with manual with that option.

In 2015 my dad bought a new tacoma. Since then we have gone back and forth with trash talk (mostly joking) about his little truck and how much of a sled it is. Since 2015 I have owned 1 gm, 2 ram and 1 ford full size pickup.. my dads tacoma has 95,000mi and never seen a check engine light. The joke is on me.

I currently own a 2014 Toyota Tacoma with 340,000 k's. I am looking into a 2017 with 108,000 on it. It was one owner that maintained it very well. That model is a TRD Sport. Would you recommend buying that one based on information you know about that year? I assume if any issue would come up in that truck it would have happened already, right? thanks :)
