The Black River National Park is the main forest area of Mauritius, covering an area of more than 6500 hectares, in the South West inland region of the island. A forest where endemic plant species and animals thrive in their habitat, maintaining the vital balance of nature in a fast evolving tropical island. The volcanic soil is rich in minerals and has produced a luxuriant vegetation where endemic plants intertwine with each other. During the start of winter season, guava fruits ripen abundantly and attract many fruit picking enthusiasts. Several wildlife protection and preservation projects have been put in place to safeguard this precious flora and fauna sanctuary of Mauritius, where the key attractions remain the Black River Gorges view point, the Alexandra Falls and the Plaine Champagne forest area. From the Black River Gorges View Point platform, we can admire the Paille en Queue birds performing their aerial acrobatics within a magnificent panoramic and immersive landscape. This place offers a unique opportunity to observe the natural realm of Indian Ocean tropical forest, and its wide variety of wildlife and plants.
