I think it's a song about a soul flying to heaven and someone left behind saying goodbye to them.

It'll be 40 years later this year the album "The Unforgettable Fire" was released & the title song above is from. Just unbelievable where has the time gone. Bought it on LP when it first came out. & subsequently bought it on CD in the late 1990s. A great, early U2 album, at that.

Just like everyone else says in the comments, this is a masterwork; a perfectly emotional and chilling song, to me it's their very best. I listen every year and go on a little binge until I put it away and listen again the next time. I just cannot get enough of this song. Sometimes I wish I could swallow it whole and keep it with me forever.
