This method is straightforward if you only know Roman Numerals. Try multiplying XXIV by XCVII without converting to Arabic numbers

Is it any easier than
13 x 24
10 x 24 = 240
3 x 24 = 72
24+72= 312?
And anything x16 is the same as doubling 4 times?
Any power of two is doubling that many times because that’s how exponents work (now how easy is it to multiply by 32 in your head)?
It’s like Vedic (sp?) math where if you memorize a bunch of rules, you can do a lot in your head. Some, or even most of it, is a bit situational though compared to what you already know.

The 16 x 26 starts with an odd number not even. You failed.

I remember I've used this kind of method. Like halving a number and multiplying the other term as many times. I would do it till I reached a number that was easier to calculate with in my mind

I've seen this done before by starting with 1 and doubling on the left. I get that. I can't wrap my head around why divinding by two excluding the remainer and crossing out even columns works. I see it crosses out the same lines as the method I mentioned, but why does it work?

It's way easier to times 10 times 24= 240, 3x 24= 72 +240 - 312

Ridiculous it took me about 5 seconds, 10 X 24=240, plus 3x 24=72, add them both together, 240 +72=312

I've always just mentally taken the first number, split in 2, multiplied, then added.
16x26?
10x26 (260)
6x26 (156 or split again 120+36=156)
260+156=416.

Oh I adapted this without releasing and going into this video the only thing I didn't do was leave out the remainder because I would always start with even numbers until odd then multiply. I only did this with higher numbers because I would've done it (Y0 x YY)+(Y x YY)

I was wondering why you needed to sum the odd numbers then I remembered that as you round down you need to factor them back in.

Alternate and unusual methods are always fascinating. People in the comments saying that this is way more confusing that methods used today are right, but they're also missing the point. This is not an easier method, it's really cumbersome. But it's also really interesting to get a look at a disused method of multiplication.

How complicated, and can't see how that even adds to 312. Much simpler would be 13x2/13x4=26/52=312 when the 5 is carried left; or 13x4x6; or 10x24+3x24
