What was the worst piece of gear you ever bought from a thrift store or garage sale? I enjoyed goofing around with this little piece of junk just to see what happened. You know what they say, all that glitters isn't gold (or in this case, PINK!).
ОтветитьOr you can get a Sony video game console, that works well too😊
ОтветитьThank you
ОтветитьThe why (make that DVD design).
I don't think they were marketing it to middle-aged men. My daughter and probably millions of little girls and other people would probably love to have something that was pink (with some decoration) instead of boring black like like everything else.
I wouldn't be surprised if that would later be coveted because if it's kitsch appeal.
I'm thinking of the gaudy 70s decor that now appreciate.
A reason to make it lightweight is to reduce the cost of shipping but also makes it practical to travel with it.
For example, I go to my parents' lake cabin that has basically no TV reception and limited Internet. I bring a DVD player and a lightweight flat screen TV so that we can have movie nights.
Usually, when I go to a hotel, they want to charge an arm and a leg for crappy movies. If I pack a small DVD player can plug in a DVD player and play whenever we brought along (or could pick up from Redbox if they are still around).
I guess I could also plug it into the auxiliary port of any old boombox or other stereo at the lake cabin or places with vintage audio stuff in them and be able to play CDs.
What is the model of the Sony BlueRay player you use?
Ответитьnice little pink guy ...
ОтветитьYou know you can store 1428 CDs in a 1TB SSD. right?
ОтветитьI actually use a cheapo Sony blu ray player plugged in via Coax to a Schiit Modi 3 to play CDs. Can't really comment on sound though. It's mostly just a novelty since I have my pc right by.
I actually find this topic really interesting. To me, the idea that different CD transports plugged into the same DAC may actually sound different is fascinating. After all, they're all just reading the same bits on the CD, right? Yet people seem to hear differences anyways. As someone who doesn't have a ton of money to spend on gear, I often wonder how the sound of these cheapo DVD/Blu-Ray players compare to CD players costing several hundred dollars when they're both used as just transports, with the same DAC.
sony receiver? do you own anything good? which one is is bad...the cf player or the sony?
ОтветитьI have been a 'Hi-Fi'-Buff in my early teens ( puberty years: to be exact); The term: 'Audiophile' wasn't coined yet. I have been following your Forever Analog channel .. since day-1 ? You are really educating audiophiles and I can attest to the verity of your ideas, suggestions and knowledgeable teachings. Learning is an unending process and one who listens to something that make sense will always gain. Thank you for sharing this hobby. BTW, I am 79 years old, woke up with Vacuum Tubes and during the advent of Transistor technology in the late 60's, I was glad I clung to my 1964 Fisher 800-C Receiver; I occasionally listen to it every now and then. As a serious Audiophile 10 years after, I made a loan and rewarded myself with a USED Audio Research SP-3 Pre-amp and I/52 Power amp built in 1973; still, my main listening gear driving a pair of VOTT Valencias (half a century old). Listening to the musicality makes me more passionate. BTW; again... my profound appreciation on your journey in educating the "Millennium Audiophiles". 🎼🎹🎻🎷🎸🎵
ОтветитьEnjoyed your video, I just picked up 2300 CDs at an estate sale and I was concerned by using my older cd players. By the way what camera are you using, its super clear...
ОтветитьYou are headed towards a divorce if you always seeking "wife's approval"
Ответить"Want to go to the thrift store?" "Sure." LOL, Goals!
ОтветитьControlling jitter with a clock is all important when it comes to the transport. A decent buffer will also be essential. No budget gear will give you this option.
ОтветитьStick with Denon & harman kardon, rotel ,Nad ... skip the rest !
ОтветитьIt will play CD, it's not high end. It doesn't support CD formats like CD-r or CD-RW, mp3,atrac3,etc...
ОтветитьI currently have my Toshiba SD-100 DVD player, which I bought back in 1999. Now back in the day, the SD-100 was an excellent DVD player, it has co-axial port, as well as a RCA output. So recently, I got it down from the loft, to hook it up to my Roksan K3 amplifier, which of course has it's own built in dac and of course, everything sounded great.
I then decided to try it out with my Topping DX3 Pro+, which is a headphone amplifier & dac, with built in blue tooth (amazing for the price) and everything sounded great with headphones on. Of course, the one problem was the DVD player was extremely noisy. So I decided to open it up and just to give the working parts a bit of a going over with WD40, and now, you can hardly hear any noise at all coming from the Toshiba, and the sound is great.
So maybe if you can access the insides of the pink DVD player and give it a lube, it might sound a lot better.
Great vid! Cheap pink player with a coaxial output...gotta cater to that market of stereophile 7 year old girls with outboard DACs. Anyways, it's that time of year with yard sales a plenty! Always on the lookout for solid electronics! Thanks for posting. Liked and subscribed!
ОтветитьCheap players can have loud drive motors.... Real annoying
Ответитьnice ~
ОтветитьWhat about the Sony DVPSR210P DVD player that's been around for about 10 years. It's been as cheap as $24 but now it goes for $34.95. In 2014 I purchased one and it still plays and works today.
ОтветитьIs that Sony the STRDH190?
ОтветитьI bought 2 Daewoo 🤘🤘snazzy looking DVD players from Target in 2005. I always covered them up. Only watched 3 box sets and maybe 3 burned discs total on both. Both failed after maybe 10-14 hours each. 😠 They were always noisey and got to skipping after a few years of sitting. I really had to screw with the remote to not skip frames. I don't think I got my $50x2 of use to be honest.
PS beware of hidden damages in thrift store. I've lost hundreds on thrift store garbage
Over 20 years ago, the term "digital quality" was used like it was still a feature. And comedy was that feature
ОтветитьYess you can.
ОтветитьI'm going by the thrift store tomorrow in the rich section of town.I collect cds so I will collect players now. Thanks
ОтветитьGreat video! Very fun, but actually informative too! 😎🤘
ОтветитьGood vlog. Whether a CD player can be connected with an amplifier.
ОтветитьAll my transports are Sony or Panasonic DVD or Blu--ray players; most from Goodwill. But now I really want a Memorex!
ОтветитьMaybe a cheap cd walkman will have less rattles? Or a playstation ? What's the sound like if you bypass the DAC? Is there much difference? Can you get CD 'bass expander' on a DAC?
ОтветитьGreat video
ОтветитьI just found an Onkyo dx-c390 at the thrift shop for €60. But it doesn't fit in my hi-fi cabinet 😢
ОтветитьI think the people who designed the easy bake oven may have designed that particular disc player.
Also, if Barbie owned a disc player, it would be that one...
This video was 100% fun, but also very, very informative.
An external DAC can turn any reasonable/compatible disc player into a component punching above its weight thus giving it a second life.
I'd like to see an easy bake oven/DVD player combo.
Great Video!
That pink DVD player would seem cooler if it had Henry Mancini's 'Pink Panther' theme playing in the background. Was that DVD player made by the My Little Pony people or by Pepto Bismol? :)
ОтветитьI'd love to see someone out there hook up a Crosley or Victrola suitcase record player to a McIntosh amp and to hook up the amp to some super high-end speakers by Bowers & Wilkins or to a pair of Klipsch La Scala speakers, etc. JUST FOR THE IRONY. Hahaha! :)
ОтветитьGreat video. I'd like to see someone hook up a suitcase record player to an external phono pre-amp and then to a great receiver (like your Marantz 2270 perhaps? I love my 2270 too) to see if the sound quality is far better and if one can turn that lump of coal into a diamond. :)
ОтветитьNot sure if ‘Pink Thing’ was a sly reference to the XTC song or not. Either way, that’s way cool.
ОтветитьIs that Sony receiver your daily driver now?
ОтветитьI have a Cambridge CXC transport and an Audiolab 6000CDT. Great cd transports. But I start a couple of years ago with a Megatek 30 bucks dvd player. The pink One that you have there ( maybe less boring for a lot of people that prefers colors than a black or silver box ) is like the sony cheap 45 bucks Dvd player with no screen. Sounds loud on idle, the laser sounds when reading, but let me tell you something. In this hobby when you start to spend more and more, sometimes you think that some of that buys doesn't makes you feel like you really upgrade something. and it happened to me with cd players. I upgrade speakers from klipsch 600M and Sony CS5 to wharfedales Linton and Emotiva B2+ great upgrades. You really hear the difference. Dac upgrade. From schiit Modi 3 to Denafrips ares 2 . Yes you can hear the difference here. but from 30 bucks megateck dvd player using the coax output to the Cambridge for 700 or the audiolab for 650, now i feel that the upgrade was not too necessary at this time, Because of course, it have less noise, almost zero when reading cds. Maybe more information "transport"? i don't know. With the Denafrips Ares II, The Megatek DVD player and the B2+ I can't hear any difference, really, because when i hear music , normally i do it more loud than the laser sound that goes out from the megatek, so I never hear the laser when listening music. I don't know, off course maybe I'm wrong, or maybe I am not an audiophile, but with a switcher, the difference switching 1-2 , 1-2 the more easy way to hears differences , I don't hear any difference. Low, mids and highs, Clear, perfect, same sound for my ears. So I really think that maybe the CD Player can be the last thing that you have to upgrade on a 2Ch system. first. Good Speakers, Good Amp, Good DAC, If you like turntables. A Good turntable with a good Cartdrige ( you hear differences swaping cartdridges ). a good phono preamp, A good streaming service, good decent cables, and finally when you checked and feel very pleased with all that equipment, Now you can upgrade the cheap cd player, or maybe not,. I think there is a lot of people that loves that pink player, and don't feel comfortable when somebody laugh and ridicules even a cheap product color. You can say that you don't like it , but I think It was too much. by the way , good channel, take care!
Ответитьuse the dac. the use of an out board is pointless.
ОтветитьIt would be fun if you tested that DVD player's DAC to see how it sounds.
ОтветитьDefinitely a conversation piece, for the aesthetics alone. U, like I need help. 😉
Ответитьgot my panasonic blueray 5 bucks with remote at thrift its great
