So far with 3 levels of fighter and 2 levels of ranger, my character literally said "you know metal arrow heads are about the same as one and a half musket balls or something like that" and then pulls out a Kalthoff Repeater because I'm gonna fight some bears like Leonardo Dicaprio as Hugh Glass

Personally I like augmenting this with a level 1 dip into twilight cleric. Advantage on initiative, mega darkvision and nice bonus spells are really powerful with a stealth archer like this.

Gloomstalker/Hexblade Warlock is fun AF what about an invisible visage of darkness itself. Because the invisibility from Gloomstalker can ignore the disadvantage of heavy armor, by casting of darkness on yourself and going invisible because sucks to be them I guess because you can SMITE THEM WHILE INVISIBLE, WHILE ALSO DOING OODLES AND OODLES OF DAMAGE. Oh and if you go Custom Lineage for a feat, guess what? You can have Shadow Touched for FREE DARKNESS ONCE A DAY, THAT YOU CAN SEE IN, SO YOU CAN SMITE A HEXED AND MARKED FOE

Oh boy i hope my DM doesn't pull what he did to our drakewarden last time we played Tomb of Annihilation and drops a CR23 dragon on a level 9 party who turn one hit our ranger with a 'save or be instantly incinerated along with all your items' sort of spell

I'm tempted to make a gloom stalker ranger soul knife rogue, so I don't need to worry about run out of ammo plus sneak attack, or an hexblade for the same purpose.

Im playing a thri kreen gloomstalker in spelljammer and "INVISIBLE BULLET TORNADO" they wield a rifle and a pistol

The problem with Ranger was the forced hyper specialized elements of it at first and the design limitations they put on it and that is why this one could beat that. The Gloomstalker was about night attack. Not forcing you to be okay in one situation but one that happens all the time!

(Truth is that the Ranger is a support fighter. They never were meant to be the main fighter or caster but meant to be the person that supports others. Goes into the camp so the rogue has back up. Fight along side the warrior so they can’t be flanked. That kind of thing. They just did not go all the way with it and should have. )

Imagine a Gloomstalker who takes eldritch adept for devil sight paired with a hexblade

Genuinely surprised he never mentioned Swift Quiver. Say you're able to sneak up on a target (and let's be honest you were able to sneak up on a target with Umbral Sight, Greater Invisibility and expertise in stealth from Canny) you can cast Swift Quiver before a fight for a quite frankly absurd 5 attacks in the first round of combat. 8 If you dipped 2 levels in Fighter for Action Surge. And if you have an ally with Haste? 9 attacks on the first round of combat, all with advantage thanks to Umbral Sight, two of which with extra damage from Dread Ambusher and all able to have Sharpshooter damage added on.

A Gloomstalker Ranger makes a strong contender for the best 'one rounding the BBEG and making a massive anticlimax' character in the game

Played Curse of Strahd as a Gloomstalker Ranger and he was a total badass. If a Rogue is like a ninja assassin then my dwarf was a military scout sniper. In the final battle I rolled a nat20 and he decapitated Strahd.

I played a GS 5, War Cleric 1, Rogue 2, and I have never been happier. I'll probably dump the rest of the last two levels of Curse of Strahd into Rogue

My next chater is going to be a drow 5 gloom ranger and 15 shadow sorcerer
