I think the old man kept himself back this whole time as the nuclear option the scorched earth last resort. He knew the devastation he could cause and he sought to avoid that whenever possible. What I mean is that if the Zanka No Tachi abilities are named after cardinal directions then could he have combined two of them to form an even stronger ability. For example combining North and East to form Zanka No Tachi Northeast or South and West to form Zanka No Tachi Southwest.
