I sat on that throne when I was 5 years old, they have blocked off so much since I ran around there as a kid!

I don't know much about Greek mythology. The mythology behind the conception of the Minotaur was really fascinating.

Love Crete. You should visit Gortyn. So much not excavated yet. And very ancient. You would love it. I went there a few years back.

When I lived on Malta some years back I couldn't believe how hot and dry the summers were. The oldest Maltese homes collected the winter rainwater in underground cisterns but that was for one family. When I went to Knossos I kept wondering where they got the water a place with that many residents would need for drinking, cooking and washing. Was rainwater sufficient? Darius, can you enlighten me?

What treasure to humanity that such an historical site was so well preserved. As the late Bronze Age is still quite mysterious.

That last few minutes of tips and recommendations is really good, I see (and may have done it too) people rushing through archeological sites taking pictures but not taking the time to really touch an ancient rock, sculpted by hand thousands of years ago by people with the same feelings and desires of today, make that connection with what brought the civilization we enjoy, stop and smell the roses moments are really relevant when exploring these sites.

Beautiful. My wife and I had a trip scheduled for Crete but the pandemic halted that trip. Crete is on my to-visit list in the future.

I think that's probably the respectful and tactful explanation of Evan's work I've ever heard! Well done! It's easy to sit in judgement of what he did, without understanding why - trying to encourage investors to give him more money to further excavate and preserve what was on site. Appalling by today's standards, but necessary 100yrs ago with professional archaeology in its infancy.
Knossos is a must-see for anyone visiting Crete, a superb glimpse into ancient and mythical Greece.

The Bull Vaulters is my favorite fresco ever. It's an expression of their attitude towards life. The bull's fur symbolizes or even depicts the milkyway, the horns are the lunar symbol. I think the Minoans had the best bronze age of everyone.

I didn't think the Griffin Frescoes were actually original? Those who don't enjoy Knossos might want to go to Phaistos-it is spectacular, and I didn't even get to wander as much as you usually would due to covid year. We went from Iraklio to Phaistos, took a swim at Matala, filled our water bottles at Spili, dropped rental at Chania airport, and ate dinner gazing at the lighthouse all in a matter of an easy day!

Love Knossos-been 2x and will go again-it hooked my interest in ancient history as a youngster. It's ruined enough, so at this point, can't we just enjoy what it is, as that is now a part of archaeological history too, even if it sets a precedent for what not to do. When I studied classics in college, they taught us to despise Schliemann for destroying Troy, more than Evans for a few fanciful structures.

I did not enjoy Knossos - it felt more like a film set. The museum in Heraklion though was really good.
