I am amazed that people can visit an active volcano and say that they were never advised of the risks. It's an ACTIVE VOLCANO!

I live in New Zealand. There should not have been anybody near the Island, ever. People actually used to life on the island to mine Sulphur and other minerals until they were killed by an eruption. Lake Taupo in the middle of the North Island is a super volcano that last erupted about 1500 years ago. Rangitoto Island just of the coast of Auckland, the biggest city in NZ, erupted about 160 years ago.

I have a birds eye view of White Island...all my ancient life.
2019. The warning signs were clear for 10 days prior. Earthquakes in, on and around the Island. And it was blasting BLACK smoke. So..Geonet ignored the signs or if they did raise alarm, they were overuled by Work & Safety. Yeah...the organisation that prosecuted the life saving hero's, tourist operators and the owners.
Some tourists tried to sue their cruise ship but that claim was dismissed in foreign Court.
Work & Safety ought to have been sent to jail.
I know all this on account I was watching and warning Geonet.
Now....recent. May 24th, 25th & 26th 2024. High blasts, BLACK smoke. Good thing the prevailing wind is NORTH.
Honestly....most locals don't even notice...even when they smell sulphur in Opotiki, Bay of Plenty N.Z.

Scariest thing about White Island, it's related to Taupo, and its cousin's in Tonga. On day those little steam puffs are going to be a proper eruption, which I will probably hear about 15mins later in the south island, as to whether or not the Bay of plenty still looks the same otherwise, I think of Krakatoa and think it could be a bad day for my country.

So, I guess adults are children now? Active Volcano, you want to hire someone to take you there, you might die, that's your business. No Children allowed by law, adults can make stupid, potentially life ending decisions all they want. Every single adult on earth knows volcanoes can kill you, there's no one to blame but yourself. You say, unscrupulous vendors want to cash in irregardless of human safety, well so do the victims families, it seems to me. Your adult relative who was killed knew the risks, yes they did. What about climbing Everest? Can an adult make that decision? To hire a guide and go for it? Do we really need a nanny state for such ridiculously obviously dangerous choices? People take chances every single day, many pay the ultimate price. At any given time, the odds of fatal incidents are low but someone does pay eventually in all things inherently dangerous. Take for example carnival rides or amusement parks, you won't catch me riding those things, they are dangerous and someone, no matter the regulations, will always die using them. You know the risks adult human being, make your choice and forever hold your peace. Moreover, if someone is selling you the safety of an activity, you know the fact they have to sell safety means it's inherently dangerous and don't tell me you don't know. Gross negligence is a whole other matter but my guess is, the authorities knew what was going on at White Island and most likely agree with me, that is until something bad happens and everyone wants vengeance, revenge and compensation for poor choices. Of course this leads to a nanny state and I won't have it, I don't need Government interference, I'll make my own choices and live with the results.

in canada on the Ontario and Quebec border is a supervolcano. bigger than the yellowstone caldera, the blake river megacaldera complex

When I left New Zealand in 1981 there were no visitors allowed on White Island apart from permitted and accredited researchers and such. The reason for that restriction was there to prevent this exact type of stupidity. I wonder when and how this was changed.....

So if I go over the street without looking right or left I could sue the owner of the street or maybe even those who repair and clean it. Nice time for fools and dumb idiots.

When i traveled the north island of NZ, i set up my tent at the shore of Lake Taupo. Late night i read in the travel guide that this huge Lake is the Caldera of a super-volcano....i didnt easyly Fell asleep that night...😮

I've been there before and it was erupting but from about 10km away never went onshore.

It's bloody criminal, Geonet has no volcano drums or cameras monitoring White Island now. It's a very dangerous volcano with a Supercritical Aquifer, and the Tsunami risk to US in Tauranga and other coastal towns and cities in the Bay of Plenty is enormous.

Climbing up on any volcano is risky .. if it’s not smoking and shaking that’s better .. I climbed Mount Fuji at Japan on July 1977 .. Up the backside with two other Marines .. No incident .. Cold at the summit standing in snow .. 13,600 ft I believe, or so .. Just under 14,000 ft .. I felt a small earthquake while there .

I remember this. As for privately owned island recently a good friend was startled when I said I would never want to own an island. When asked why I said I don’t want to be a dictator. Any oversight I would set up would be in my control and I don’t want that. On places that are not as small or isolated people can at least attempt to reach other places to live. 😮
