You can use a sponge with tape raped around it and tape to drum hoop take a eye dropper to add drops to your liking and it works on all the Tom's too😊😅😮

For me, EQ rings are the best tool after tuning changes to control ring. They are inexpensive and easy to remove if needed. I like to use the Big Fat Snare Drum for a lower tuned snare.

I play the snare drum a tiny bit higher than the centre with oak sticks. So its got more ring (Old school teacher) Evans Genera HD dry Hazy with the holes then cut a top muffling ring back to clear the holes by about 3mm. High bottom, medium high top head. Has worked well over the years for live using a old Pearl Export ELX 14 x 5 1/2 with the pure sound wires and had lots of sound engineers say it sounds great no problems. No ratyle no buzz. Have played in big/small venues and the sound guy has said "I almost turned the Mic off" 😮😂

Question : I have an old 60's Slingerland snare with a metal shell ... ; can I line the inside shell with foam to give it a deep concert snare sound ?

Been ok ahi if for over a decade. I personally never had running problems.
Not sure if it is cause I invested in Top of line drums. Fact, I notice no matter what tuning a top of the line Tom or snare will sounds amazing in any tuning

I would suggest tuning your lugs. It vens out the tension across the head. It's easier to find your tone note you want. I am nowhere near a pro, but it did get better results. Your resonate head should be tuned to the tone you want also. Drumtone Pro App is a great tuning app.

ironically, those first two examples that you used for "bad" snare sound are actually incredible, and remind me of some of the classic snare drum tones from some of the greatest drummers ever recorded.

IN THE CONTEXT OF A SONG, that unpleasant "ring" can be tuned and dialed in to the rest of the instruments to make the whole mix feel much larger. With no "ring" or "note", the snare sounds boring as shit! Unless you are making funk or modern pop, DO NOT overthink your snare ring or any kind of buzz. When played with finesse, these things empart a ton of musicality and remind the listener that they aren't just listening to a bunch of stock samples.

Quick tip, don't tune or set up drums in solo. If you hear TOO MUCH ring WHILE the mix is in full swing, then you should adjust tuning or EQ the "ring" out, but if you are in your practice room alone, don't invest too much mental energy in finding the "perfect" snare tone. The tuning that sounds "perfect" in solo will ALWAYS sound thin and small when the whole band kicks in. Food for thought: your job is not drumming, it's "song-ing"!

Get a ludwig super sensitive, no strings or straps. No matter how many times you drop the throw, it always comes back the same, with clarity and power.😁

This is great but you can tune high for a snappy snare then just buy The Big Fat Snare Drum & The Green Monster (you can even layer them for a really dead low tone). Use these all the time.

One more technic to reduce/eliminate over ring is on batter head after tuning up evenly is to: give a further slight 1/10th turn on the 9, 10, 11, 12 o Clock tuning lugs. Try it! Its insanely effective & doesn't compromise or chock the pitch.

Downtuning also reduces the stick response.
Tweak that snare high as she'll go, then throw your wallet on top. Easy peasey.

I have a Yamaha 13" wooden snare with Puresound wires, but my problem is that the wires are resonating without laying to the bottom head, so the sound of them is like it isn't tightened / mounted properly. How that should have to be fixed, do you have any recommendation? Thanks for your video.

I'm new to tuning drums .. I just started watching tunin video's lately. One thing that I just learned that is very important to me is where you said not to worry about tuning your resonant head to tight, just don't tune it too loose/low. That I will experiment with now. I'm glad you hit the bottom head and then the top head so that I now actually have something to work with.
Before I turned on your video, I turned on my complete sound system here, good quality main speakers and 300 watt subwoofer so I think I got a good representation of what the actual sound is from that snare drum .. thank you for posting by the way.

Thank you for this video! One interesting thing though, I have a Mapex Saturn III and my snare just never sounded quite right. It was when I LOWERED the snare side head a bit that it started to sound better. So I think on some snares, it actually helps not to crank the bottom head way up there. It's still tight, just not super cranked.
