If you look up their anatomy woodpeckers have a very unique skull structure that allows them to do this without getting hurt. Obviously most of you know this but what you probably dont know is how unique their skull really is. If anyone reads this you should check it out. May just learn something new.

I was mowing my Mom's lawn many years ago when something similar occurred.There was a hickory tree on the property line and whenever I passed by that area I felt rotten chunks of the tree hit me.I looked up and approx. 15' off the ground a large pileated woodpecker was feasting on carpenter ants.The tree had to be cut down soon after.

I guess the woodfu*cker is an unwanted specie.

I really need a scientific explanation for this.
