Wonderful. The best presentation I've ever seen on this clock.

It is a universal constant that academics allow their egos and arrogance to get in the way of true progress. Harrison was essentially ripped off by the board of longitude, not because his invetion was not worthy, on the contrary, because it actually was. Jealousy and envy are two nasty harpies.

Is this about a genius or some ego of a rather poor presenter

It amazes me how much and how often british (lower case intentional) "learned men of stature" has f**ked over someone deemed of "lower class" who ended up being smarter then the men in whatever society/group/association is doing the f*c*ing.

The Harrison clocks at Greenwich are definitely worth a visit ---- quite remarkable peices of engineering - especially considering their age.
H4 is very different from the earlier clocks - much more compact. .... And, no, H6 (the fictional Harrison watch from 'Only Fools and Horses ' ) is not there! :)

You neglected to mention the GPS also corrects the difference in "time' between your location and the GPS. The difference is a result of Einstein's discovery that time is not a constant

If he built the most accurate clock in the world what clock was used to judge that it was only losing a second ever so often?

Yet the Chinese, in the 15thC, 300 yrs before Harrison, had accurate water clocks that allowed Zheng He to sail his fleet to Australia, Europe and possibly America. His maps included the Americas.

What I find fascinating is that longitude was determined by the positions of the 4 easily visible moons of Jupiter. The time for the positions were given at Greenwich mean time and then longitude could be determined by comparing it to the time of the ships position.
