To grasp the local dimension ofthis story read this: SL (North West Somalia) is a region in Somalia. Consists of 3 areas. West, East and Middle. Only the middle part (Hargeisa and vicinity are the core separatist. For this reason (for & against separatism) there was a heavy fighting b/w the eastern part of SL(Lascanod city) and the separatist in which the unionist East SL won.
Now, Ethiopia made illegal MOU with the separatist middle SL in an area that is West SL. Now the West SL is up in arms against the Middle Separatist.
Somali government accuses Ethiopia of interference in Somali affairs and taking advantage of the situation. Two days before the MOU the separatist Middle and the Somali government met in Djibouti and agreed to talk about unity. However, Ethiopia not happy with that Djibouti meeting declared this MOU sabotage. The point is even SL is not together. The Eastern part of SL will never accept separation and gone. The West Awdal region the same. What is left of SL is the Middle Hargeisa area. Who is SL then? Hope I contributed.

Did you know that Somaliland was recognised as an independent country even before the establishment of several other African nations, including Italian Somalia (present-day Somalia)? Notably, this recognition was affirmed by 34 nations including the United Kingdom, United States, and the United Nations.

Furthermore, it is fascinating to note that there was no formal union treaty between Somaliland and Italian Somalia that officially solidified their union prior to the establishment of the republic. As a result, this absence of a proper union agreement essentially nullified any legal obligations or agreements between the southern region and Somaliland.
