I recently realized that I've been hesitantly puting colors next to eachother, even when there is contrast. I feel like this video was a missing piece. Youve explained it so clearly. Thank you!

I just purchased your "Mastering Composition" book (without the DVD ~ although I was hoping to secure it) . . . all because of these fantastic video tutorials you've been so graciously providing for us. I'm really loving this particular video . . . as I love the POP of color that seems to attract my eye to art the most. So thank you. One request - if I may? I'd love to see a side-by-side comparison of before the vibrant colors are added and after. Might that be possible?

Hello Ian, I am very interesting in this process for my portrait practicing (I am pretty sure , it will levell up and add vibrancy) and i have a lot of questions and maybe, you can help me :
- Do these transitions colors have the same width light side and shadow side or is there a difference between the two ?
- If the global form is turning, is it the same width of the transition color (light side for example) as for a flat surface ?
- If the global form is turning, is it the same saturation (chroma) of the transition color (light side for example) as for a flat surface ? I think no but maybe I'm wrong.
- I suppose that the value of all these transition colors are the same that one of the bleached hue (or shadowed hue, depending of the side you are) ? Is it correct ? Thanks a lot

Funny enough i have an opposite problem...i want to know how to dull down for the more defined color palette or natural looking landscapes. When i tried paper for oil one of the challenges around the paper getting yellow is to learn how to make color change as little as possible, and as a result all colors became much more vibrant... Another solution is to dilute paint with finishing varnish but that makes painting very fast and difficult. and makes people realize that i didnt have formal education

I was painting a monet last night and it was a lot of work for a beginner. The water lilies absolutely looked hypnotic but I had to continue painting and then the hypnotic affect was all gone. I don't know how to recreate it.

Hi Ian:

I was at an impasse with a painting yesterday, watched your video this morning and immediately had some good ideas for what to do.

Really appreciate the effort and thoughtfulness you put into your videos and this one was super helpful!

This demonstration goes so far beyond just pointing out areas that work or don't work in a painting. Thanks for explaining (and demonstrating!) this particular 'why'

Sensational, understanding the harmony of everything with that "small" detail and balancing colors and values, makes a lot of difference.

Thanks for sharing Ian!

RE your 'standard' palette. Do you think the choice of colors on your palette is in some sense 'universal'? In that regardless of what you paint and where you live, your palette would pretty much remain the same? I guess another way of asking: can you get any color you want from the palette you use? I noticed that you don't use any blue other than ultramarine (plus dio purple) and that you use colors I've never touched (cad orange). Kind of thinking out loud here. I guess all painters gravitate or decide on colors that also 'resonate' with them. Another thought in the moment is, paint the color that is in front of you vs paint the color that enhances, inspires or compliments? Maybe I'm overthinking it!

This light phenomenon is one I've notice constantly in life and master studies- but despite seeing multiple lessons about this topic, your presentation is the first to make it 'click'! I feel much more comfortable applying this technique to my own work, now.
