Please forgive my potentially controversial theory as I certainly mean no disrespect and have always been a big Petty fan. However I have long speculated that at least in his later years that Petty might have been sporadically utilizing canned vocals during parts of songs containing high, hard-to-sing sustained notes. Most specifically the chorus to this song ("Heyyyyyyyy baby!") as well as the chorus to "Free Fallin'". Notice in this video how the camera rarely focuses on Tom whenever they get to the chorus. Further possible evidence is that when he performed this song during the 9/11 telethon concert back in 2001, he sang a lower note in the chorus (although in fairness he might have deliberately been singing the song more subdued to mark the somber occasion). Of course I'm perfectly happy to be proven wrong on that and that Tom was just always able to nail these songs without any help. But it is a poorly kept secret that a lot of live acts will utilize pre-recorded content to make the songs sound more "authentic". And Petty himself was known to sing some of his songs in a lower key as he got older (but then again near the end of his life he was singing "Refugee" back in its original key so who knows...). Anyway again I mean no harm on this one but was just curious if anyone else ever speculated that this might be happening.

There was a GREAT version of this that Tom Petty sang whilst carrying a Confederate Flag across the stage. You Tube seems to have wiped it I think. Does anyone know where it is now?

The late great Prince said about the late great Tom Petty that he (Prince) always liked it when Tom Petty was on the radio because "you knew you were going to hear a good song." They played a good song on the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and now they're doing it in heaven. Much love ❤️

ОтветитьAlmost every time we ask our Facebook communities for songs that have helped them through depression or a particularly hard time in life, someone brings up Tom Petty. No, music can’t cure a mental anguish or make hard times go away, but it certainly can help guide us through or at least provide moments of comfort. For many, Petty did this. As one friend put it, “He is the only musician I have ever listened to that made me feel like he was singing about my life.”
