Ladrang Dhandhanggula Maskèntar features a beautiful vocal part – sung by Heni Savitri and Skyler Basya – and the softer-sounding instruments of the gamelan. It is relatively rarely performed in the United States and even in Indonesia because it features an unusually rapid expansion of time, transitioning from one irama to the next.

The term irama indicates both a tempo range and the ratio of fastest parts to the basic beat. Here we move within the first minute of the piece from a relatively condensed irama to one that is four times as expansive. Later we move quickly back again to a more compressed sense of musical time. This is challenging to coordinate, requiring concentration and full attention from the musicians who must listen closely to each other, paying particular attention to the drummer but also to other instruments that subdivide the beat. Additionally, the drum part is unusual, played only for a few pieces (most drum patterns can be applied to numerous compositions).

The text sung relates part of the history of Majapahit, a medieval Hindu empire centered in East Java, which controlled large parts of Southeast Asia for several centuries before falling to a neighboring Muslim Javanese kingdom in the late fifteenth century. The queen tells her prime minister that he must search for a youth named Dhamarwulan, who lives in the mountains, because he is the one who will win the impending war with a neighboring king.
