I was living in Portugal and after 10 years got a little restless. Decided to head east. So I pointed the Harley towards the morning sun rise and 3 days later I was in Serbia. Got an apartment about 25 km north of Belgrade and lived there 5 years. Recently moved farther east near Romania and bought a small farmhouse with a little land. Looks like I'm settled here for the duration.

beograd- the white city, is the most underated city in all of europe......

belgrade was the capital .principality of serbia, kingdom and later federal republic of jugoslavia... 
its very rich in history, a gateway to east and south europe on the sava river and duna-danbube river to central -northern europe...

pobably as important as constantiopole-istabul in geography, as every empire wanted too control it...

trg republik is quite busy and good place to watch locals and tourists..., also look at the obrovenich and karadjorge dynasties history * when serbia was a monarchy... a kingdom...

also the rakija and the kolo dance...

just a note* the serbian dinar,,,, should be a polymer note, it would not tear or break at all..., one of the few issues , in comparison to the romanian leu that is polymer banknote...

Actually you see pretty often black people, mostly tourists, but also those who work for foreign ambassies in Belgrade. Older people remember many students and guest workers from african countries like Ethiopia in yugo-socialist time.

I am from Serbia and when you mentioned Chicago , just look at this.
Belgrade(1,7 milion people) and in last year he got 29 murders , Chicago(2,8 milion poeple) last year got 770 murders.
A lot of people from the west say eastern Europe,Belgrade,Serbia is not safe , just criminals,drogs,sex trafficing,....but Belgrade is pretty safe city when you compare to any american big city.

I am from Serbia. And... btw. Lets be honest. Belgrade is just ordinary balcan big city, on edge of Europe. Yep, architecture is unique, not like in central Europe. But nothing special in general. Main value of this city are people, city has the soul. Lot of cities has no a soul, Belgrade stil has it. And second factor of atraction. Belgrade is cheap city, Serbia is cheap country in comparation with most of european countries. Cheap but civilised and relatively clean. Cheap but Is not 3rd world country. This is very important to say.

Hehe we are, unfortunately, not used to see black people in Serbia... I heard that lot of black ppl visiting here, feel like ppl are constantly staring at them, so they sometimes get uncomfortable. But, it is just because we didn't have much chance to see them before, so we end up staring unintentionally! We respect and welcome all ppl of this world, even aliens tho! ;-D

As for black people, there is a reason for that. Serbia never had colonies, never imported slaves, and in new age, when people started moving more freely around, Serbia was poor, politically unstable, and not very interesting to foreigners of any race. There was a time sometimes between 60's and 90's when people were coming from African countries to study in Belgrade, some of them stayed, and that's about it. Now more and more people find Belgrade as a gem and decide to move here to live, so it's getting more common to see racial diversity.

You can't even exchange Dinars in banks in the US.

Even the ground tiles there are gorgeous. The only thing that gives a ugly feel to Serbia is Grafiti on so many places.. bad grafiti. But it's doesn't really take away from everything else. It truly would be PERFECT if not for that. Maybe that is what keeps it hidden from the masses?

I loved it so much in 2011 travelling and staying with couchsurfers, and coming back again for EXIT I fell in love with Serbia and now I'm moving there June! I can't wait to return! Best hidden gem in the world.

Welcome to Serbia, mate! I'm glad you've made it! Now enjoy, you came at arguably the best season - spring. Try to catch some nature at Ada, Koshutnyak or Avala during the spring time.
The public transport system is super easy to use. At basically any kiosk you can buy a BusPlus card that costs like 2,5USD or so. Than you charge it at the same place with, let's say 10 more bucks. Whenever you enter the bus, put your card to the electronic reader and it's done. Keep in mind that 1h of ride is a bit less than 1USD and you can change vehicles in that time. There are good maps everywhere, the vehicles are well marked, there's an app and a good website for BusPlus as well. Check it.
