Cool trick, you can play the E minor blues scale over that final E chord, with the tritone, and the tritone is the flat 2nd of the root of the song, A. It's the only chord the note sounds good over.

it seems to me more an E phrygian than A minor...

I am right to think that this is an example of turning a minor key's 5 chord into a Major? (Em to E).

If that's correct, would you try to avoid a G over the E chord, and instead play a G#?

I think this is an example of "borrowing" a chord, and an out-of-key note. Can anyone confirm? :)
