The best thing about this song, I heard it the first time while playing the game. It wasn't like hyped up beforehand, I had no idea going in that this scene would take place or this epic song would play. It was just so exhilarating watching the way they directed that whole sequence, and the fact this song just plays consistently through the full 20+ minutes of gameplay, *chef's kiss*. Truly one of if not the most powerful pieces of final fantasy music ever composed!

Final Fantasy IX was my entry into the franchise.
I started in the summer of 2001, but I got no further than the Desert Palace.

It wasn't until I played it on an emulator between 2009 and 2010 that I was able to play it from beginning to end.

Eventually, I bought the soundtrack on CD, because I loved it so much.

I love that when people do speedruns of FF9 they always have a moment of silence during this part so we can enjoy the best song in the game.

"Chivalry requires a knight to look after his comrades-in-arms. I will not abandon you! And I shall follow you to kingdom come if I must. You remember that!"

Steiner to Zidane in Pandemonium.

Steiner had an amazing character progression. He started off as a stiff knight who wanted Zidane executed for his actions early in the game. In the end, not only does he perceive Zidane as his equal and friend but also as a fellow comrade-in-arms he would be willing to GIVE HIS LIFE for.

FF9 had other great characters with great stories but there was something truly powerful about this moment.

Now I want to hear a re-tooled version of this song titled "You ARE alone", which sounds sad and hopeless.

To the princess: he is a champion who gave her wings and helped her grow into the woman and queen she needed to be.
To the lost puppet boy: he is a brother, teaching him a love for life through friendship.
To the heartbroken dame-warrior: he is a drinking buddy and a shoulder to cry on, consoling her and giving her hope of a second chance at love and life.
To the stubborn knight: he is the foil who shows him how good and evil cuts through the hearts of all men.
To the cook: he is a teacher, opening their eyes to all the wonderful other things in the world besides food.
To the orphan girl: he is a father who gives her a family and a new home through his friends.
To the lone assassin: he is a rival to whom he shows there is still kindness in a cold and dangerous world.

He gave each of them the thing they needed to bring them back when their own spirits were about to fail.

And so, in his own darkest hour, when he is forlorn with learning the truth of what he is, they come to him and remind him that his actions for them define him, not what his creator made him for.

And so even in the face of death, the brutality of the power-mad, and the horrors of war, they close together, forming ranks around their friend. For they each know in their hearts thanks to this bond they share with him, come what may, even the end of all things, they have something special with him that can be expressed with these simple words: They are not alone.

I was proud of Zidane when he kicked out his friends. Most of them are grifters and they will never understand you anyway. Top angst, loved it.

Of course, they all came together again shortly after...but Zidane was an affable chappy so it was extra effective,.

I really love this track, it does a great job of capturing the heavy weight of depression which plagues Zidane during this scene. The additional layers that come in as the track progresses are his friends trying to reach out and rescue him, whilst the tick-tocking acts as Zidane shutting down emotionally and going into auto-pilot. No longer thinking or feeling just moving forward step by step.

This very scene in which this music plays, how the scene and the music go along side by side....the song starts out with only a metrum and an organ, lonely, brooding, but a while in, another instrument sets in, joined by yet another and another and another one.....same with the group, Zidane starts out alone, bereft of hope, brooding.....but then one friend after another shows up, encouraging him in the same way he has encouraged them all.....joing side by side, so the music and the group reach there uttermost effect when they all join together and unite their power, reassuring towards each other:

"You are NOT Alone!"

Seeing some comments from people who find very personal meaning in this theme. I can relate as well, as someone born into extreme trauma and that being my norm for the first 25 years of my life. Only difference is, things like trust, family, friendship, and human connections in general were never part of my development--which means I had no mentors, heroes, teachers, or any such figures in my life, really; the small handful of people who actually did try to reach me were unable to because of how I was affected by trauma. Psychiatric malpractice and being a guinea pig for these...professionals...is part of that; for 20 years starting when I was 5 years old, I was little more than a drugged-up zombie. And it's just a little hard to reach or teach a zombie.

So this theme is meaningful to me, but for somewhat different reasons from the other people I've seen.

Unfortunately, developmental trauma like mine doesn't go away--ever. I carry many grievous wounds that will never heal no matter how much time passes, and I'll probably never be able to connect with others normally. This I've had to come to terms with, and I've been working on that for the past 10 years--ever since I was able to finally start...idk, living. And I will continue to work through this no matter how many people try to act like what happened to me is impossible--believe me, I've already had to deal with that sort of invalidation, and I already know I'll have to keep dealing with it for the rest of my life. Humans as a species still have a lot of work to do in regard to just respecting differences and life in general...and yet, to say there's no hope for me isn't truthful. I'm at least aware that there are genuinely good people in the world--the sorts who'd give their all to try and reach me, in spite of my own developmental circumstances, for no other reason than to just do a bit of good. There's no call to disrespect those people, or their inner strength. Beyond that, there is far more to this world than humans and their civilization. Even if I'm never able to truly connect with humans, I've never had this issue with animals, or planets, or even the planet itself. Ours is a world where all things, human and not, are connected; we all impact and affect one other, often through our very presence alone. I wonder how much better humans would be as a species if they could just...y'know, connect with and learn from the world around them, and everyone who shares it with them. Maybe that would help humanity to finally embrace the value of life, and help end the cycle of trauma, corruption, oppression, abuse, stigma, and all the things that ultimately lead to the kind of suffering I've endured. Most people wouldn't come out of it like I have.

Call it a survivor's duty, but I've pretty driven to try and create what's basically a new paradigm of human existence--to be a high example for others to follow, as someone who can never truly integrate into any existing society. And I plan to do this by creating my own space and building bridges with everyone else from there.

Might go a long way to showing everyone what it means to not be alone. We are all stronger when we live, work, and walk together, after all.

Back in 2002 I had just finished playing this game and had the tune stuck in my head for days. My Lit teacher told us we had to write a poem about Beowulf. I had too much fun matching it to this song, and even after 20 years I still remember the whole thing because it's just so catchy! Here's a little just for anyone curious:
Grendel, curse of night, who can stand against your might?
Who will even dare? Who will save us from this beast?
Strong men die in vain. Wielding swords they all are slain.
Heorot's Hall a ruin in the wake of Grendel's feast.
