As a retired Marine who graduated from Parris Island, SC in 1977... the Army's training of their DIs is second rate.

Yelling to assert dominance is seen across the world as a sign of insecurity and bluffing. You gain authority, but not respect. Talking to each other as equals does that, and this is a good step in the right direction for everyone to come out the other side with their sanity.

The drill sergeant is your best friend he will teach what you need to know to survive whether you like it or not. People saying they are mean or to rough need to understand the enemy on the battlefield will not be as nice. If you look at full metal jacket the guy was firm but fair he praised you for doing well and punished you for being a dumb ass.

Imagine going in and not getting the military experience. I know every generation says it was much harder but without a doubt the military in these days are so soft man. Idc what they say, these marines and soldiers are trash these days man. Luckily we just have the best shit.

My company commanders (what we called drill sgts in Navy bootcamp) were brutal and unyielding. They were also intelligent. They shaped us into smart, dedicated sailors who could fight the ship. I would never serve into today's Navy and I don't recommend it to anyone.

The pusafication of the military will result in massive American casualties and defeat. The military is a killing machine, not a social experiment!

My husband was one of the last batch through the old basic at jackson and his battle buddy at AIT was one of the first through the new basic. They got stationed at the same base and are both getting out once their contracts are done. Basic wasnt a factor the main reason is they are done with the toxic leadership and BS the army seems to think 70% of their day should be filled with and not their actual job they were trained for. Having a manager on a power trip is never fun but in the civilian world that manager can only make your life hell on the clock, in the military you get that 24/7. My husband got a text at 2 am telling him about a 4 am formation and was then yelled at for not being at the 4 am formation and didnt see the text until he woke up at 440 to get ready for the standard 6 am formation (which he had confirmed prior to going to sleep). He got yelled at for not showing up for a staff duty that he was not even scheduled for. He deals with 3-4 higher ups on the daily and 1-2 of them are normally on a power trip and the good ones cant make up for the shitty ones. Multiple times hes spent the weekend packing for field training only to have it be canceled because his higher ups didnt do their jobs to make what they told them they needed to spend their weekend preparing for even happen. He and his former battle buddy are not in the same battalion its not unit specific its military wide even my cousin whose husband was in a different mos, base, and obviously unit dealt with these same issues but worse. Most people arent leaving because the army was too tough its because they are not voluntary signing up to deal with more years of this BS being their daily lives.

How anyone can be really offended by a drill sergeant if he yells on every single person before and after you, It's not enough for a reason to feel validated and leave.

Lol.. I came through in 1999.. There's a reason DI were being the way they were. I didn't get out originally in 2002 because of my experience in basic. I got out because of toxic leadership, horrible pay, and how my last unit treated me.

Went to basic in Fort Sill in 99. Anyone who knows anything about basic knows that was one of the worst as far as yelling and difficulty. I didnt have an issue with the yelling and being smoked. We all knew it was a game at the time. We all knew it wasnt personal. We all knew the purpose. It only really lasted a few weeks, maybe a month. Honestly was way more scared of the gas chamber. That being said I am interested to see how this change affects things years from now when the young soldiers become leaders. A lot of people inside and out complain about inept leadership. I have never heard of anyone leaving due to bootcamp. People leave for the same reasons they leave any job. Usually its because your boss or your job sucks. I was only in the reserves but i left because I just got back from a war with the wrong country and didnt want to risk getting deployed again to a country that had nothing to do with anything. The 2nd iraq war really killed my sense of purpose and patriotism. If I had a say, i wasnt going to put myself in harms way for that bullshit. Other than that I loved the friends I made and training was always pretty interesting and you just wont find anything like it in civilian life.

The military fights for everyone but Americans. They don't even protect our borders, the core responsibility of any real military. Its a joke, an embarrassment.

Not exclusive to the military, all leadership around the country are cowards and just wanting to cover their own asses.

First off this isn't going to do anything but breed a whole bunch of sissies. In 2013 when I went to basic training at fort Jackson I remember the shark attacked very well and it let me know that I was in my place and that's where I was until I earned their respect. Basic training is by far the best memory of when I was in the army. To know that everybody can function that made it through training and a stressful environment and the camaraderie was there because it was you against the drill sergeant and it built a team. The movie Major Payne had it completely correct.

Basic training was supposed to be a great big STRESS test, it was to test your, physical, emotional and mental endurance. I've been out for 14 years now, and I'm not sure if this makes them ready to withstand the pressure of live combat. War and Combat are nothing but CHAOS, loud explosions, bullets firing and ricocheting all over, commands are being yelled out over the noise and you only have your mental and physical training to make sur you and your fellow Soldiers stay alive to complete your mission.
