I read the book.......Leopold's ghost. It tells the story of king Leopold of Belgium looking for a country to colonize. As this excellent video states.....Germany and England were colonizing African countries that were easy to access. Leopold heard about the congo so decided to take it. Leopold was brutal......torturing the people to produce first coffee then rubber as a cash crop to go to Belgium. If quotas were not met, people would get caned or have their left hands amputated. There is a monument Leopold built in Belgium. It's called the arch of the left hand!!!! Leopold used the wealth coming out of the congo to finance his life style, support a long term mistress, and build public works like the arch of the left hand. When Leopold died, his private fiefdom was Ann xed as part of Belgium and became known as Belgian congo. Granted independence from Belgium it's a shame corrupt leaders have further decimated the country. However given it has an illiterate population, probably 25 percent having HIV or aids, and 250 ethnic groups, I don't see any hope at all for this country....rip congo...

How are you going to make a story of the Congo without mentioning the CIA's assassination of Patrice Lumumba? He was one of the leading Pan-Africanists and one of the few democratically-elected African leaders that was not immediately committed to fattening his own pockets. Exclusive institutions and poor infrastructure were commonplace in Africa. Having a leader partially committed to developing infrastructure (e.g. Nkrumah in Ghana) is how you begin to make up for that. Assassinating that political leader sets a precedent for might-makes-right.

The congolese jungle even in this war zone has seen the least amount of deforestation out if all the jungles, maybe thats thanks to no farming but they have national parks there is a society over there rn.

In general, a good take on Congo history, still some remarks :
- The "Independant State of Congo" of Leopold II was a monstruous capitalist enterprise as you said but after Belgium took the colony (somewhere around 1914, mostly because of the "cutted hands" scandal), it was just a creepy colony like the others.
- the congolese indigenous "elite" of colonial times was called "évolués" not "évolvés". It was an official system, and a very racist one, segregation was systematic until 1960 .
- Belgian gov, european mining businesses and the CIA fragmented Congo after 1960, mostly because they didn't like Patrice Lumumba, the first elected president, who was suspected of communism. The country became the eldorado of international mercenaries (Belgium, France, South Africa,...) during the independance war (1960-1965)
