As a guy who can touch type on dvorak and also RSTHD (currently using), both of these layouts are more comfortable to use, the speed gain may be a little, but it's mostly for comfort and concentrating more commonly used keys on the home row, RSTHD goes way farther and prioritizes other things too, like the anatomy of human typing, and using AI to find the best layout using these parameters (which ended up being RSTHD). this is simplified, i encourage further reading for anyone interested in possibly reducing the likelihood of gaining arthritis (just a hypothesis) or typing more comfortably.

Sadly, it sounds like Barbara got strong-armed into playing along.
It sounds like she agreed to be an advocate, and she was very clear with her word choice, but was, either verbally or situationally, threatened to play along or suffer consequences.

I want a Guinness World record for being sat in my room watching this specific video, at this specific time, with this specific weather and at this specific period in the suns lifetime.

Literally no-one else has done that so I have superpowers.

Fun fact, qwerty was designed to be less efficient in order to not lock up the keys on the typewriters of the time. With modern technology it actually makes more sense to use Dvorak. Being that qwerty is the only standard I've ever used, anything else still feels wrong.

All the cheating stuff aside, I was absolutely floored by the typing speeds talked about in this video. The highest I've gotten was somewhere in the mid 90s and I thought that was pretty fast 🙃

Wish I saw this video sooner, in middle or high school 2 of my friends and I all decided to learn and use the Dvorak keyboard layout. Specifically, because we heard that it was supposed to be a faster more efficient way of typing. I can't remember why or when I gave it up, but I remember getting to the point where I could type without looking at the keyboard normally. Just funny to have that life experience and find out this history behind it lol

The second you said "Guinness" I knew it was a lie. They aren't world record keepers, they are just a paid service. If you give them enough money they will make up some nonsense and give you an award for it, regardless if you are the best at whatever it is.

the fact that she only typed 70wpm on live television is hilarious lol. my PB is 170 and i don't think i've ever seen 70.
also, the statement that QWERTY was just arbitrarily decided is a bit weird, because i don't think it was.

Mastertype was a typing game originally from 1982. I played with it many times over the years since my family got a copy in 1985, when I was 5 years old. In that edition it had 15 lessons in total with the ability to create your own lessons with the words of your choice. The words were random, and never was a complete sentence (that I could see). I remember in the early lessons it would register each word with the space bar. Later lessons needed the return to register each one.
Legitimately typing, I could only reach lesson 4 or 5 and at about 30 WPM on our Commodore 64 (QWERTY), and as an adult. As a kid, you could achieve 100-200 WPM just by pounding on the keyboard as fast as possible!
[The game itself featured a globe in the middle of the screen where you would type. From each of the corners of the screen a character from the keyboard (and later, words) would move into the center of the screen to destroy a quadrant of the globe. Type each character or word and your wizard character will zap it. If it was too close to the globe, the word will just be knocked back to the corner. Otherwise it will be replaced with the next word on the list.
When a word hits your globe, that quadrant is destroyed. Should it be hit there again, your game ends in an explosion and the message, "The Words Won."
Completing the lesson would give you the words per minute and score, plus a recommendation to try the next lesson or (if you got the game over screen) repeat the last lesson.]
It was a fun program and good for the time, but it was not a full-fledged typing program to monitor your ability.

The name of the Dvorak keyboard layout is pronounced differently from the composer's name. I typed on Dvorak for over 10 years, and am in the process of trying my own variation of NotGate's ISRT layout now.
