I think tens of thousands of dollars kind of plays down the fact that it can be upwards of $60,000 a year or $30,000 a semester. Our doctors graduate with something like $300,000 in debt if there lucky.

We had to take final exams at the end of the year every year of high school and in most cases unless you had really high grades all year you failed the year if you failed the final exams and if you failed the final exam in 2 or more subjects your last year you didn’t graduate and had to go to summer school or retake the school year the next year to graduate

I went to private schools in California, Berlin, and Zurich. Zurich was better in language instruction. Berlin was more fun. US was OK, but weird with the security drills and armed guards. I would rather have gone to school just in Berlin.

In USA the taxes are much less than in Germany ( direct and indirect taxes ). Germany is providing free public university education at the expense of higher individual tax.

The German system is obviously better, which can be seen already on the fact that you can apply to foreign universities with that grade and don't need to take a second test independent of it. I don't know any American who thinks that high schools in America are doing well.

One major flaw of the German school system is the lack of appropriate opportunities for neurodivergent people.
Which is something I had to deal with and something that my son has to deal with as well.
Which leads to the next major flaw: Home schooling is illegal.
Private schools aren't that expensive but they're also not good.
Boarding schools are hella expensive and not necessarily as high standard as they claim to be.
Not high standard enough o meet the educational needs of a neurodivergent at least.
Because neurotypical teachers don't understand neurodivergent students.
What is a normal person supposed to teach someone with an IQ like that of Einstein?
So, because of these issues you end up much below your means and become depressed and have to fight for the right to live your own life your way.
By the way, rich people don't have smarter kids, they can just buy whatever they want and then put their kids in positions they didn't have to earn, that's my observation as a former boarding school kid.
Most of the time rich kids are more antisocial and dumber than others. Intellect has nothing to do with status.

The American school system was awful when I was a kid (25-30) years ago and it is far worse now. Discipline problems are the number one reason and a useless curriculum is close behind. I cannot tell you how much valuable classroom instructional time was wasted on movies. In high school I had a history teacher who just showed us taped episodes of the History Channel with a worksheet he handwrote.

In my school career back then in Hessen we normally went into primary school, grade 1-4 (some kids went into the Gymnasium straight away thereafter), and more in a comprehensive (Gesamt) school, where there was another level at entry, called Foerderstufe for grade 5 and 6, where they had two more years to evaluate what level of schooling you would have then (Gymnasium/Real- of Hauptschule which were all present in that Gesamtschule) from 7th grade on. During Foerderstufe you could even be in different levels of schooling for Math and English (A-level for those who were really good in it, B-level for those average and C-level for those were not so good in it and I was among the latter in both, my interest in English only kicked in in 7th grade deeming me much better). This system ceased then once you got into 7th grade then where the whole curriculum was depending into the level you got into anyway (Haupt-/Realschulemor Gymnasium)r. Bit complicated to explain. And yes an apprenticeship is often still king in Germany, companies are often not willing to accept years of experience in jobs, over having an apprenticeship on your CV. Even though, unless you have trained in that very same company you're applying for and know all their processes already - I think in any other job you need to start from scratch learning how processes work there, so for general jobs like office work or sales assistant I find this quite narrow minded to ignore experience from applicants. Having done an apprenticeship in the field wanted does not guarantee someone is good in it (maybe someone has just done the training and then worked something else and has no more experience than those 2 or 3 years), whereas someone having ten years of experience may not have an apprenticeship under their belt, but proven record in having worked successfully in that field for and extended amount of time and I think that is even more valuable. (of course that doesn't apply for any positions you need to have studied for). I think it would be important that employers were more open in Germany, giving people a chance to proof themself in the job and who knows in the best case it works out and the person can become an asset to the company. It's worth a try in any case. Having learned the basics is fair enough on one side, but experience is invaluable aswell, any gaps you will fill up while doing the job anyway.

Too much emphasis is put on going to college/university. It has created a paper ceiling: getting jobs without a college degrees, certifications, etc., is so much harder than it should be. Choosing a trade, instead, is so looked down upon that there is actually a labor shortage brewing, despite their incomes actually being competitive with jobs requiring a degree, and there is no debt to be paid off.

I think that 10 years old is a bit too young to see if they're smart enough to go to college or go to a higher school. There was some things that 10 that I struggled with but then later on I like really got it. I feel like this is just to prejudice. I do like this system. If you don't want to go to a college you can do an apprenticeship as young as 15. This system would work if kids could choose that here where I live.

Perhaps I'm unique in this perspective, but I personally feel that the idea of real roading children into a particular path at the right old age of 13 to 15 is absolutely disgusting and a complete deal breaker irregardless of the quality of a school system. The entire point to having a high quality school system is to enable children to make the decision as to what career path they want as an adult by giving them the necessary skills to succeed in any given path in life. That's not to say I disagree with the idea of enabling people to choose a trade at an earlier age, as I entirely agree with the idea that college and university are not necessarily the best choice for a particular individual, I don't agree with the idea of outright denying them the possibility to get into secondary and tertiary education simply because they underperform in primary education, especially when you consider the fact that some kids thrive in the arts but have a hard time with math and science, for example. This is a debilitating flaw when you consider the fact that the arts are an educated career path instead of a trade career path.

Fantastic video! I have to say though that US high school education hasn't always looked like it does now. We used to have pretty solid vocational tracks, but those were slowly killed off starting in the late 70s. We had guidance counselors who were honest with kids and could steer them toward the track that best fit them (this starting in 9th grade). Those tracks were generally academic, trades/technical and business. At some point, kids were told you MUST go to college or you were something lesser. 11th and 12th graders in shop built a house that was designed by a student draftsman. By the time my son was in high school anything resembling that level was long gone. I tracked academic, but 3 years of woodshop classes has provided me a life-long hobby and the ability to work on my own house.

Meanwhile, we have a huge need for trades workers in the US. And, (this is huge), you many times can get that training free AND earn some money via joining a union or finding the right company (after high school or via work-study programs).

On another note, we have a Siemens plant in my area. They had a program set up with the local high school that greatly resembled the German system. It unfortunately lasted only 3 years or so.

America began to adopt German educational ideas very strongly c1880-1915. Some American stereotypes of Germans/y date from Bismarckian times. I am pretty sure I grew up in a unique setting, it seems unusual as I grow older.

Some comments here are a bit disrespectful. A couple months ago I was still a student in Germany. But it depends in which state you live in. I Live in Bavaria and some of these comments are saying that the German school system is not as hard as people make it seem like but let me tell you the school system I went through is one I wish no one to ever go through.
I remember the first pandemic that sent us into Quranteen. This was the most beautiful time I have ever experienced. I got to know myself for the first time more than ever before. The teaching was also different. But not just different, for the first time it actually made sense since the teachers were only allowed to give the most important information instead of making it so hard for us.
Going from science class (Realschule) to psychology (FOS) was also a change.
Psychology in 11th and 12th grade is fun but if no one tells you how to use thesis in examples it can go the wrong way even tho you studied hard.
I would never compare a Highschool diploma from the US with one from Bavaria.
Those are 2 different universes…respectfully.
