I went to the premier of this performance with Beethoven at the University in Vienna on December 8, 1813; this performance emulates exactly how he conducted it. I was a young 20 year old back then & now I'm 230. Time flies...

Love the second movement most, but the whole thing is a work of musical beauty and genius.

I so love this orchestra. I vividly remember them with Haitink at Carnegie Hall in the 80`s playing Mahler`s 5th. After several curtain calls the conductor brought out the score and shook it at the audience. Karajan would still be taking bows.

A glorious rendition of this magnificent piece of music representing Beethoven's dynamic symphonic evolution: marvellous musicianship from this wonderful orchestra and Haitink--at eighty--magisterial at the helm! I watched this performance and returned once more to this symphony, one I have loved for forty years, as a result of reading Wagner's ravings over the virtues of the A Major symphony, which I found in Romain Rolland's wonderful little 1903 biography and study of Beethoven, recommended for all Beethoven fans: erudite, moving, and memorable.

This piece is also one of my favorites. When I listen to this piece I find that I'm hearing the end of his Classical period and the transition to Romantic, which embody most of his 8th and of course all his 9th.

The most haunting part of this piece was that he was partially deaf when he wrote it. His 8th and 9th were written when he was basically completely deaf possibly from Paget's disease. Think about that for a moment. He wrote this being partially deaf, and his 8th and 9th were written when he was all but deaf. Think about that. His 9th, widely regarded as not only one of his greatest works, but one of the greatest works of all time written when he couldn't hear anything but possibly the loudest notes and possibly feeling vibrations on the floor.

My mother was a classical violinist in orchestras around the world so I have a special love of the music. I still live in the 5 bedroom 120 year old brick Victorian that she lived in for over 20 years. The sound of her violin along with a pianist playing our piano would float through this house sounding just as wonderful upstairs as down. Due to this I don't have a favorite composer. I listen to Berlioz, Beethoven, Bach, Brahms, Vivaldi, Handel, Dvorack, and most others of these periods. I've heard concerts throughout Europe, and the US>

I was so fortunate to see Maestro Haitink on numerous occasions. He was truly one of the great conductors. You never got the sense of ego from him; he was always serving the music first and foremost.

I declared the 9th symphony the greatest piece of work EVER! I just may have changed my mind. By the way, Beethoven's music does this to me very often. Anyone else have this problem?

Whilst my father lay in a coma from which he never woke I played him the Deutsche Grammaphonen Beethoven symphonies...his favourite being No7.

After his death I discovered from those who cared for him that his life signs changed and he seemed more restful to them. I cannot hear this without missing him and bathing in the overwhelming beauty of such a masterpiece. Thank you for sharing this.

I love Beethoven's music and the 7th Symphony is truly remarkable. I am a dedicated amateur jazz pianist and have even been trying to play the opening theme of the 2nd movement by ear as I cannot read music. Apparently when this great work received its premiere, Beethoven had to be turned round to realise that the audience were on their feet thunderously applauding. The scene is depicted beautifully in the film "Immortal Beloved" from 1995 with Gary Oldman as Beethoven. That this great genius could be robbed of his hearing by his early 30s and yet leave what he did for humanity for all time is truly remarkable. Beethoven represents the triumph over adversity, his life was not easy, and he denied himself the stability of a loving relationship in order to dedicate himself to his music. A genius and also a heroic figure. When I improvise on jazz tunes at the digital piano in my local church I like to think that I am on a low rung of the ladder of musical creativity, a hierarchy of music which leads to the likes of Beethoven at the very top. I love it when he did variations eg Diabelli variations for piano. My favourite works of the German genius are: Symphonies 1,3,5,6,7 and 9; the piano sonatas, especially the later ones; the songs; the late quartets as performed by the very best players. Beethoven also had humour in his music too eg in the Eroica piano variations at one point. We should always encourage family and friends who don't know Beethoven's music to try it, for me it is like a lifelong friend that never lets you down. Great performance from Bernard Haitink and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, much appreciated on a night when I could not get to sleep.
