How to SET UP Your NINJA V the RIGHT WAY (Atomos Setup Guide)

For clarity, when I said "processed into HDR", I mean that it converts the way you monitor the image into the HDR monitoring configuration of your choosing. As far as I know there is no way to "bake in" the HDR conversion into the file, even though the manual says "record, preview and review using HDR". You can bake in LUTs, and I also think you can convert the signal coming out of the HDMI output port to be HDR, but it shouldn't affect your log recordings on the SSD--other than the fact that it removes options like "Legalize". In your thumbnail, your video is filling up the entire screen. Is that a feature in the Ninja V, or did you put that in the thumbnail yourself

so if I record to the ssd thats on the display, I dont need the cameras memory card? or you need to have both?

Total beginner question here: What is the purpose of having HDR recording? What is the purpose of having a monitor that can record? Is it solely for backup purposes or can this monitor-recorded footage be used for something else?

I am asking because I would mainly use ninja V for anamorphic desqueeze and preview of log footage with my LUT.
I don't do recording, just a preview for correct exposure and sense of what it would look like since I would still color grade it in DaVinci.

I bought the ninja v+ to use wwith my GH6 and I had to send back the first one i got because it had baked-in warmth that did not at all match the image I was meant to be getting with the camera. When I would apply a lut or color space transform in davinci, the entire image would basically turn red. It was very strange. after they replaced it, I noticed the same thing would happen with the new one, but only in specific settings. I still don't really know why.

It's so weird that atomos screwed up their menu so badly after the older shogun/ninjas had such good intuitive menus

hi ... have some questions ...
1. Is there a way to delete lots on your ninja V ?
2. Is there a good correction LUT for the Ninja V so I can see the same thing that I see with my sony a7s3 the I activate gamma assist ? ( the only thing I want so see ist the same that i see on my Sony a7s3!!! I already installed a lot of different LUTS even Sonys official LUTS ... the problem is that is not the same , the dark parts are just black on the ninja V and on my camera is fine and I don't want to see log all the time . I use Slog 3 PP8 . THE LUTS are 90% fine if im in a light environment but it's terrible in a dark environment or in an extreme environment like when in a part of mi image is extreme dark and extreme light . the dark part on my camera is ok and I steel can see details but on my ninja is just pure black. if a apply the same LUT that I have on my ninja as a color correction LUT in post production is fine as well , that tell me that the ninja V is not handling the LUT as it should. So if I expose after my ninja V im gonna end up with a terrible footage. pls help. firmware AtomOS 10.90.01

Gerald. I want to thank you for these vids and explaining in precise understandable language how to use this equipment. I have to learn how to shoot video for my day job and this has helped out in understanding why some one would need an atamos ninja 5. Especially since it can save us boatloads on memory costs. This with the battery kit and two 1tb ssd's is cheaper than buying memory cards totaling 2 TB. With that knowledge and the knowledge you've presented here i can convince my boss to buy one of these puppies lol. Thanks again sir.

I know this is an old thread, but the more I try to work this out the more confused I get.
I recently got the Lumix S5II.

When I record to internal media (SD Card) using V-Log, I get a file that has a V-Log gamut. This footage looks great on the timeline and shows to have V-Log gamut.
When I record to Ninja I get a file that is Rec-709 and is less flexible in the edit, at least I think it is.

Is the Ninja applying a 709 lut to the footage? Why is the gamma not the same?

Some of what you said isn't completely accurate.

There are cameras that can't record 10bit 4.2.2 internally but can record it externally.

Does this also matter when shooting in RroRes Raw? Because when i set my a7siii to output a raw signal via hdmi the legalize option dissapears. And is the DNxHR HQX Codec also a raw format like ProRes Raw? I never used the HQX format and i am a bit confused whether to shoot in ProRes Raw (without the legalize option availible) or DnxHR HQX with the legalize option selected. I just want to shoot in Slog3 sgamut3.cine on both my a7siii recorded externally in a raw format on the ninja v as well as an my a7iv internally and be able to monitor the a7siii correctly. What do i have to do? :D

Hi Gerald, thank you for all your work! B&H has the Ninja V on sale right now (May 2023) and I have some video work coming up with my Nikon Z7 and Z7II. Is this still a helpful tool for me to have on a gig? I would probably just have one to record the #1 camera but I'm assuming it would extend my record time from the otherwise limit of 30 minutes. Hi Gerald, thanks for putting this together. I am only using Ninja v as a monitor. When I connect it to Sony FS5, it looks beautiful. But when I pressor record on the camera, ninja goes black, no display. Is there something wrong with it or it's a setting? Thank you.

Man I am having an issue with my Atomos Ninja V plus connecting to my new Sony FX3 . I have to plié my 3.5mm from the ninja V plus mic/out to my input at all times other wise it won’t work with HDMI only and I have to have the 3.5mm cable hanging is there a way to set it up without the 3.5mm cable and get the audio through my HDMI . Thx

Hi Gerald, I have the Sony A1 and the Ninja V+... For some reason the only way for the Ninja to receive audio signal from the A1 via HDMI is when recording on the A1 is active... but if I want to record solely on the Ninja, no HDMI audio.. I can't find any settings to adjust. So I'm stuck recording in-camera to memory card to send HDMI audio on the Ninja... Any help would be appreciated!

When I have the BMP4K connected to the T5 SSD, it sees the drive no problem. When I connect it to the Atomos input, I see the video, but the option on my BMP4K no longer shows any drive options. How do I fix that so that I can record from the BMP4k to the SSD in the Ninja V?

Ninja is simply AWFUL as far as gamma handling goes. Simply AWFUL. It can't display SMPTE bars correctly, the plug bars are displayed incorrectly. Check and see. Also, when switching between recording as ProRes, DNX etc. and ProRes Raw recording the gamma changes. The same LUT in Ninja used for the LOG output (in my case Slog3) looks different in those two modes. Changing between 2.4 gamma and 2.2 setting is necessary. None of this is internally resolved automatically and not even communicated.

Late to the game, but I appreciate your videos a lot! Do you have a video on the setup for dual mics? I can't seem to get it to work. I have a RodeMic VideoPro connected to my a7siii and a Sennheiser e100 Lav into the Ninja V. Both have their own power, but nothing is being picked up on the Mic input on the Ninja V.
I can't even get either mic to work plugged into the Ninja on its own with it disconnected from the a7siii

Hi there. New to the Ninja V. Appreciate the content. I have a question regarding fan noise: Should that be noticable? My Ninja V sometimes shuts down after a couple of minutes because of overheating but I barely even hear any fan noise. Is that an indicator for it being broken and not working?

i know this video was done a while ago now but does the Ninja V allow you to overlay a previous shot at a lower opacity so you can perfectly match the shot?
