I wonder why Yari Ashigaru is a S tier unit... 2 cheapest units defeat one the hardest units to acquire. Oh well, guess it is somewhat accurate that spearmen in droves would destroy some elite katana wielders.

If anyone is wondering why the first line of yari was demolished while the second line beat the katanas, it's very simple: the charge on the first line broke past the spearwall, so the katanas could always reach the yari soldiers. The charge on the second line was not good enough, so the spearwall stood and the katanas could not reach the enemy without exposed to several spears first. The combat simulation in those games is very far from being perfect or realistic, but this is one thing they got mostly right (and the way it is done makes sense for a gameplay perspective)

Head on yeah Yari wins every time......now banzai rush into the flank or rear ;p

As i watched that hero I kept singing to myself, "I get knocked down, but I get up again... You never gonna keep me down!"

Unfair due to the massive morale boost they get from having a friendly army plus a General. When doing 1v1 on a flat map Katana Hero usually gets extremely small casualties, and that is not even the Shimazu variant.

This was expected. It’s not just that the yari wall is incredibly powerful for pure melee.

But that the hero units whilst still powerful units, aren’t meant for pure attrition.
They have 40 men. Their biggest buff is that they are like having another specialised general unit on the frontline constantly inspiring the troops, and that obviously can do a lot of damage on its own. But without proper support they die.

Katana heros and not meant to charge into front lines, naginata sam do that job best, katana heros should banzai flank charge

All shogun 2 units have a specific purpose, yari ashigaru have one purpose to hold a line in yari wall, they die very quickly to arrows and flanks, god forbid they get flanked by shock infantry you'll see them dropping by 10s every second. If you think yari ashigaru are the best unit and always play with yari ashigaru centric armies its your shortcoming as a player that you never understood the game fully, this same scenario would go very dirrently if there was a bow unit protected by enemy yari wall firing at the yari wall mass and it got flanked by the katana hero hero

Same but I like to combine all yari walls into one massive yari blob wall of unfathoming death and devastation.
