I have close to 40 years in air traffic control, most of that with DOD. I remember the discussions and decisions around stealth vs super-maneuverability (vectored thrust) back in the 90's. Our leadership went all in for stealth with some maneuverability while Russia headed in the direction of super-maneuverability. Even 30 years ago there were notions that infrared as opposed to radar could detect "stealth" aircraft. As with just about everything, a simple, minded enlisted man could have made far better decisions than all the educated generals and politicians. Well, guess what Russian fighters have on board now? Infrared detection systems that negate "stealth".
