Deer are pretty good swimmers? Indeed they are! I live on an island too… Just over seven miles (about 11K ) from the mainland… our island has way way too many deer - and not enough predators bcoz the deer swam here and reproduced but the predators did not swim over here. Also we have no snakes - same reason.

If I want to spend most of my time freediving and snorkeling would you recommend here over the gili islands? I'm so torn! 😅

All I ever here is people getting into trouble going to jail or being framed, a corrupt government and the Balinese complain they have had there culture trashed by visitors but are forced to tolerate it as they need the tourist dollars. And the west cannot interfere with Balinese affairs either as it would then be trashing their sovereignty as well, so you're on your own and defenseless when in another country. This needs to change thou.

IMO (In My Opinion) North Bali is better and richer nature than too busy South Bali.
North Bali has a complete variety of attractions to hidden gems unknown to most tourists to many unusual organic farming like growing Grapes for Wine, etc.
Because it's perfect climate of 4 active volcanoes around and just on the north coast, so dense tropical jungle climate meets driness of ocean climate = perfect for everything and many people don't realise that.
Even most expats and big companies chose too dry South Bali because a bit far from the active volcanoes 😅

I have been to West Bali National Park and Menjangan Island once. Once i snorkel in the snorkelling areas (Eel Garden) in Menjangan Island, i saw a Titan triggerfish.

Menjangan island is my favorite spot for snorkel in bali, you can stay 3 nights in permuteran beach and take 1 day trip to snorkel there!! 100% worth it

its belongs to Bali North Conservation. because of that government and local people there not too advertise that spots. The location called Taman National Bali Barat. the conservation is for one of endangered species in Bali (Jalak Bali). Before Ngurah Rai international airport exist, tourism come to bali by the harbor nearby that location. but today people connect to bali from south side.
