It looks like his lags only went into a single piece of 2x joist. That's not sufficient for a guardrail post. It should have bolts with washers, or those lags should go into at least 4" of wood. Construction fail. Don't do work like this.

Those power lags are not code rated????
You have to use carriage bolts and washers!!!😊

When you are giving a demonstration with confidence while unknowingly doing it wrong, we'll freeze it later? Powerlag?

Dangerous. Have your railing posts built into the structure not just relying on hardware to hold it in place. Use a double ledger on your posts for the joists and have the post go through the deck. All I'm saying

Screws to the rim plate are easy, but are not to any code I know. Easy and fast is generally not the pest criteria.

The post belong inside the box beam. Now there's no structure to stop in and out wiggle. Some blocking inside makes the post ridiculously solid. 1/2 carriage bolts and you can put a clean belt board around for a clean finish. People gotta stop with the 1970's decks with taking that task of at the first party

Don’t put your post on the outside of your deck like that after shrinking and swelling that will become loose. You should put your post on the inside of your framing in frame around them.

I love those screws. I have a box on the truck with every length. They're relatively cheap also. I used to do posts on outside of rim like that but, inside it won't loosen over time.

Laugh my ass off OK so I’ve been framing for about 30 years and I can tell you that you do not make need to make any jig whatsoever. First that can be accomplished with a single now that’s all you need one now in place of that jig.

Second, why are you putting 4 x 4 posts on the outside of a deck box why, they go on the inside of a deck box. Where you can box them in with to buy stock, and ensure that they’re completely enclosed in their boxed in and they’re not going to move.

Your two legs and even if you decided to put more legs in them, are ultimately going to allow that post to move around in the next year or two. Nice cool, shiny tricks but unfortunately it’s a shame to see that you’re this old and you still don’t know what you’re doing .

Dude you can see the floor joist is higher than the sill plate and that’s the reason why your using wedges to level the posts.

I half lap my post. Much stronger than code way. 42 years in business never done this unless forced . Your way relies totally on fasteners through 4x into 2x. In this case code is worse

A bar clamp and a pencil mark for reference positions works twice as fast. And you don't have to take a jig off every time.
