You only talked about when it’s a baby. What do you do when it grows taller? Do you keep adding more soil around the edges? Doesn’t really say much.

Thank you Brian for sharing your gardening expertise on growing tomatoes in containers, pots or buckets, didn't know about Rock phosphate or the epsom salts added but I did know about adding crushed egg shells and a british guy I'm subbed to recommends using our pee as fertilizer, obvious watered down, being for each part pee,10 parts water, and since he tells us that the pee has the usual nitrogen-phosphate-potassium base that most veggies and flowers require what's your take on using watered down pee? Thank you for sharing, heeding your sage advice with two purple tomatoe heirloom plants I have in red dixie cups that are yearning to be transplanted to a bigger area.🙂👍

Does this method of filling the pot as the tomato grow work for determinate plants also, or mainly indeterminate?

Interesting that you're filling the buckets only 1/3 of the way up. Other folks tend to add a bunch more soil than you per bucket.

Update: I see the value now of only filling a bucket 1/3 with soil: Protection from wind! I've always had issues with seedlings getting destroyed by the wind. The buckets are able to deflect the wind, protecting the plants inside. I haven't noticed any issues with sunlight either in case people were worried about the buckets over-shading the plants. My tomatoes are growing just fine using this method :)

I am brand new to gardening. I’m going to try tomatoes. I was wondering if All the items that you said to incorporate into the soil before sticking your plant in the soil. My question is do I only do this once? Do I need to put more nutrients in while the plant is growing?
Also, I I change my mind from doing the bucket, can I follow this recipe for tomatoes growing just in ground soil?

I read that tomatoes like acid, so i was wo dering if i can use acid soil for Rhododendrons and azaelas? I have some cactus soil and was going to add that to help make the soil drain better. Wanted to mix both of those with 420 spil and organic potting mix. All these i bought bagged from a horticulture center and they are potting soils? Can i get away with this wothout putting perlite or gravel in bottom and olease answer my question about azalea potting soil? If i should add it?

Hi Brian; I've been quietly following you for years. I was immediately impressed by your ability to stay on topic which kept me tuned in. I also love your solid advice which I have found to be right on and works for me just like you said. I now have twelve grow boxes which I built and incorporated many of your recommendations. I made them deep, drip watered and even built in liquid fertilizing. With your process of string support on indeterminate plants, I used steel conduit to create nice loops eight feet high over each box and used overhead struts to support the string winders. My tall telephone pole beans grew over the top. It was my biggest crop in Idaho, of tomatoes, green beans, peas and cucumbers ever. My growing season (5) is only half as long as yours so I will stay close by to continue getting the most out of my crops by following a leader in the garden world. Thank you🍅.

Hi Brian, this is my first time growing tomatoes. Thank you for all your advice. I followed all the steps in this video. I'm in 4 weeks in now & the tomato plant has tons of leaves & stretching to the edge of the container & some of the top leaves are twisting. Should I worry?

Did you drill holes on the bottom of the bucket? If so what size drill bit did you use or does it not really matter as long as it's not too wide?

For containers, I have had great success with fabric grow bags and recommend using them over traditional containers that you have to drill holes in to drain water out of. The bags also allow plant roots to breathe and not encircle.

Hi Brian! Great info! I’m getting ready to plant my tomatoes, I knew I needed calcium and have baked and crushed egg shells to use, also bought bone meal, I figure the nutrients from the egg shells take some time to be available for the plants to be absorbed, I didn’t know about gypsum , should I use some of that too or will it be to much and hurt the plants, please advise, thank you!

The problem I have is the kind of soil we have here at home, I'm in South Africa by the way BUT we have had a tomatoe plant last year that produced many tomatoes some were big some were small, we have a place were we throw potato peals, egg shells, banana peels etc so this is how our tomatoe grew...we threw it there. I want to plant again

I bury chunks of wood for water retention and nutrition but it takes a couple of years for the wood to become spongy. Never thought about diaper material. The diaper would make the dirt unrecyclable, wouldn't it? I prefer to rotate my dirt through my county's yard waste program so I'm getting healthy soil.
