More than six months living expenses. You need operating expenses too. My business took over a year to make it to breakeven, but by then I was in a horrible financial situation. He's spot on here.

6 month to live off of is what I did. My wife and I saved for a couple years to start our business with no debt. It's way too easy to get into debt, when you have little income in the beginning. It was a couple months of being fully self employed before I saw the first check come through, it was was only $200, but what a relief that my dreams started to materialize.
