Q: What's the DeLorean actually like to drive?
A: Manual transmission - terrible. Automatic transmission - terribler.
I would imagine the Delorean was quite fast for ole Hubsy?!
ОтветитьLater PRV engines were increased to 3 litres and there were also a 24 valve version. An engine from a Renault 30 with its longitudinal configuration should fit in a deLorean
ОтветитьThe 2.8 PRV in my late father's Peugeot 505 V6 was fuel injected and had 170 BHP. It had 285k km on it when it was scrapped and still ran as a clock. His was a rare 5 speed manual and surprised a few BMW's
ОтветитьNeighbour has two, got a run in one of them about 20 years ago.
It was mainly to be his "spotter", to shout out if there was something coming the other way when passing....
Great day out, the recognition you get in one of these is still impressive.
Fuel was very slow to fill, breather pipe must have been blocked, and it was better to pull on the handbrake after you exited the car..
At the factory bankruptcy auction the body panel press dies were apparently sold to a fish farm owner from the west of Ireland, who bought them to anchor his cages to the sea bed...
Most Republic of Ireland registered ones seem to end up with Donegal registrations, so your number plate will be 80 DL xxx or whatever.
Alfa Lancia 500 HP DTM competition engine = pure fear. HAHAHAHA!!
ОтветитьLooks like a lot of fun, but the cramped seating would play havoc with my back!
Ответитьman that thing looks like it could take a corner like a boss.
ОтветитьAlex from lsc is wasting time and money on a shit box. There is literally nothing special about it. The movie was good
Ответитьyour talking rubbish. The car sold fantastic. John DeLorean ran out of cash BUT had achieved a miracle building a car factory and transporting to America where the order books were full. Sadly it snowed for two and John did not get the much needed cash for the cars. Mrs Thatcher refused to pay the second payment of investment 90 million. John could not find another investor.
ОтветитьIt was a cool car before it was a cooler car in the movies
ОтветитьCrashing into the white lining lorry would be a fitting end to it since I seem to recall John DeLorean was quite fond of white lines.
There’s no getting away from what a head turner it is. It’s just such a cool looking car. But the late seventies/early eighties were a difficult time for sports cars - the TR7/8 was a heroic failure too. At the time I think a lot of people thought the era of the two seater fun car was over because of safety legislation and the fuel price shocks of 73 and 79.
The interior is remarkably un-American for its time. Perhaps if they’d used raspberry crush velour and lots of fake wood it would’ve sold better.
I’d LOVE one of these, (but it would have to be a manual.)
Thanks for the test drive, enjoyed that. 👍
Big problem with the DeLorean is that you cannot get a genuine flux capacitor anywhere... 🧐
Oh, and more seriously now, they can break their backs if you try to ride them over a jump.
i am not keen on that cramped driver's seat position. If you have to drive for any long distance that looks to for a very painful drive in a DeLorean
ОтветитьCool interior, but for a big dude it feels very claustrophobic
ОтветитьThat Scottish accent is so cool my friend. I could listen to you talk about vegetable gardening for hours
ОтветитьBuild & reliability issues......Thats Renault for you.
ОтветитьI'm hoping that the existing company is focusing on their supercar version to bankroll future models, one of which is a modernized version of this styling, and for a more reasonable price range. Seems somewhat unlikely though, and maybe there are too many legal issues with re-using the base body design.
This styling but with a better engine, standard features (AC, heating, etc.), and yes I'd actually like it as an electric (even if purists might protest, it does seem to be the company's focus). The main issue, aside from keeping to the original styling, is to make it actually within the ballpark of 'accessible pricing'. If they make it a supercar and price it as such, there will probably be a huge outcry. Granted, there probably aren't enough people to justify marketing towards the sub-$60K US market, since it would be a very niche design. Still, one can dream.
the plastic on front and rear could he anodized aluminum.
ОтветитьI understand that the name DMC-12 was used because DeLorean planned to sell the car for $12,000 USD. Not quite. The speedometer only works when you drive the vehicle backward, as in Back to the Future. It's calibrated in years, not MPH.
Ответитьthe car is so famous. i love it. i would buy one if i could afford one.
ОтветитьFinally a great down to earth review of a Delorean, you have a new subscriber!
ОтветитьI owned one...bit clunky, like sitting in gran's chair.
ОтветитьThe DeLorean story is much more intriguing and tumultuous than you've touched on. There is a reason why it was called the DMC-12. It was supposed to sell for $12,000, but because of all of the turmoil of the intended original designs flopped ( originally planned to have a rotary Wankel engine, then a Ford V-6, then a Citroen engine and drivetrain, then ultimately the PRV engine, a body made from elastic reservoir molding, then changed to fiberglass, then to the stainless steel that Colin Chapman put into use, several safety features that needed to be scrapped, etc.) the price changed to $25,000. Originally, DeLorean wanted his car to be a Corvette killer, most likely because he was angry at the split of him from GM and he wanted to stick it to their flagship car.
It is an interesting history with this car and the company itself. It is a shame it didn't work, because this car is an amazing looking car, and had it been made of fiberglass and the rotary engine, it probably would have gone like stink.
Wow that one is in very rough shape, but kudos to the owner for working on getting it sorted out.
People love the DeLorean because it is visually beautiful, instills a sense of wonder, potential, excitement, and tickles the imagination and heart all at the same time. It represents a hopeful and exciting future with a dose of reality that not everything is perfect....but it will be beautiful.
Saw one last weekend. Still a cool looking car. 😎
ОтветитьNeed to keep your speed down because If you drive them too fast, you can actually travel back in time....
ОтветитьStill looks absolutely gorgeous
ОтветитьThis was a really enjoyable, and fair review. Refreshingly fair, in fact. This particular example appears very much a work in progress, and I hope the owner restores it back to its original as new condition. I confess I'm heartily tired of all the BTTF nonsense that pops up every single time a DMC-12 is even mentioned, but it appears most people enjoy that stuff. Its a pity that DMC never really got a chance, as I expect most of the significant issues with the car would have been worked out (particularly the lack of power complaints). Its just a gorgeous car, practically from any angle.
ОтветитьWhat a hunk of junk, boink, rattle, squeeek 😂😂
ОтветитьThat 85MPH speedometer was a federal mandate during the Jimmy Carter years, supposedly to save fuel I guess. It was repealed by Ray-gun, but a lot of cars still got it for years later. Must have had a bunch of decals in stock already.
ОтветитьStill one of the most beautiful cars ever
ОтветитьNorthern Ireland is part of the UK
ОтветитьPinnacle of cool to me. Looks great, but still simple and unique.
I would be interested to know just how expensive it was, as my understanding was they were too expensive.
Seems like it didn't matter if john de lorean had already made out like a bandit.
Without a doubt, the best Review of the famous De Lorean I have ever seen. Well done.
ОтветитьBeing a resident of Belfast at the time the car was being built, I would challenge your claim of 80% unemployment
ОтветитьDeLorean put a car on the road from a concept sketch in a year and only Toyota and Honda noticed, later inventing Simultaneous Development and cutting development times substantially. meanwhile, GM spent the 90s trying to bring back the 50s, and no longer sell much outside of China and North America.
ОтветитьWhatever you do don’t get it wet or feed it after midnight!!! Oh wait….wrong movie. 🤔
ОтветитьThe only DeLorean that drives the way it looks is the one that the iconic British garage converted to electric 😂
ОтветитьThe speedometer broken?
ОтветитьIt don't matter what you say...I'm still rocking it
ОтветитьI owned one back around 1987-88. It was a fun car… when it was running. Wish I had it now.
ОтветитьGreat video! Maybe you’ll demonstrate the Flux Capacitor in another video. Ha! Thanks for sharing
ОтветитьCool car but how in God's name would they ever expect to sell these in large numbers?
Ответитьgo and see the crash test at 40 mph on you tube it,s shocking you are dead
ОтветитьThere's so many strange choices with this car.
The outside design & overall look is one of my favorite cars of all time. It's always reminded me of a Chevy Camaro from the late-80's.
The interior finish isn't great. That cloth over the instrument cluster looks like a last-minute improvised decision rather than a sports car design choice.
My mother had many Camaros, and you could at least sit someone in the back.
Does he ever address what looks like a digital rear-view mirror? Is that original?
That was very enjoyable to watch.
I'd like one in Right hand drive without the body damage, I think your example has seen a knock or two.
Plus of course, these will only ever go up in value.
It’s been my dream since I was a kid to drive one. I really hope I get to one day.
