Sorry for the little spots of colour throughout the video, this is my first time working with a green screen! I think I was too close to it so it's coming through. Just think of them as an added bonus! Who doesn't love random bursts of COLOUR?!?! 😆

There's something about
"danger in a foreign land"
that doesn't seem as flesh-and-blood real. She would never walk through Detroit at 2am. But somehow she'll do this "adventure."

Remindes me of the song "Red Water" by Rehab. The demise of her extended family created a vacuum that the entire world could not fill.

I'm surprised she would sleep out in the open. Did she try to hide at all? Also, I guess her combat training was useless. Sounds like she didn't put up much of a fight. Anyways, she knew the risks and tried regardless; good on her. Some people live their whole life afraid to even try.

Also, having done long sea kayaking trips, I would have thought she would have chosen a color for her tent and boat that would be hard to spot, though she would still be vulnerable while underway.

Read the Book Paddle to the Amazon about a Canadian who paddled from Canada to the Amazon in the back in the seventies. He encountered various drug dealers, rogue military and only survived by sheer luck, bravado and determination. Evil people seem to be the worst dangers. He also had a gun for some of the trip.

Someone like Emma exist in a state of overcoming their adversity with grit and determination. I've seen a lot of explorer types shrug off dangers figuring they could overcome them when they arise. When things get technically difficult grit and can do attitude only take you so far. I knew someone who was doing an overland amazon through hike, and they said the best thing they did to prepare was took a 3 week course on escape and evade techniques offered by ex British SAS for Jungle Warfare. Sounds extreme, but simple things like camouflaging your campsite and practicing light discipline etc... would have likely saved Emma's life.

As an ex-soldier, I understand the spirit of this Brave soldier, She had the skill set to go on her life journies. There is an old saying;
A jack of all trades is better than a master of "ONE". She walked away from the campfire, where so many sit in fear and judge.
Emma Kelty I salute you. And well done that woman for telling her story so well.

I stumbled upon your channel and just finished watching this story about Emma Kelty.
I echo many of the others in that I admire her sense of adventure and facing challenges but not heeding the warnings - and I'm sure she did her research beforehand enough to know the dangers - was very foolish. I would say the drive she felt was to come as close to death as she could - maybe a suicide mission that she would never admit to. Sad that she never found anything in life to ground her and fulfill her. May she RIP.

I lost a parent years ago, my dad. And still hurts, can't imagine losing both parents tho. So that feeling of life too short just live life to fullest was held so strong with her. She was brave and just lived each day. I honestly feel like she was definitely wise and aware of dangers but still lived each day with curiosity.

Gosh the locals are such good people who saw her going into the danger zone and cared enough about her to explicitly warn her of the huge risk. That is real concern for another human being, but she wouldn't accept their care and instead went into the lawless danger zone. If she'd had the same level of care and concern for the locals that they had for her, meaning to listen to them and accept their warnings, she'd still be alive.

This episode really made me think about how psychotic it is to emulate and admire pirates of the past. One wonders how many other adventurers were just trying to find peace when they were murdered for their few possessions. That said, I do believe she was extremely reckless. What upsets me is the amount spent of body recovery and search& rescue when people put themselves willingly in harm's way. Montana's police departments are collapsing but we are not willing to ask hard questions about the amount we spend on idiot hikers every year who get themselves into completely predictable situations. It's not right for them to suck up needed public safety resources while murder rates are soaring here. They've charged a few people for their own rescue over the years, but we need to get hardline with people who refuse to manage their own risk. Imagine how many people could have been assisted by the police in Brazil if the thousands and thousands weren't spent on a futile search for a woman who put her demons on others by throwing her psyche upon the adventuring world, rather than going to therapy like a grownup.

I am tired of hearing stories of people going on trips like this ALONE. Especially women wh become a natural prey in environments were law and order aren´t part of the ecosystem. However I have noticed that this sort of attitude towards danger in other countries often come from financially comfortable Westerners who unfortunately combine a naive perception, a tad of superiority complex and a cavalier behavior that makes them beieve nothing can happen to them specifically ´.
