Fun Fact - U2 actually played, whether live or in studio, unlike bands like the Beetles, who had studio musicians play much of their album music. (not just the Beetles either, just using them as an example).

And they actually continued play for a minute or so after Bono left the stage which makes the performance even better. I miss that part.

I forgot why he picked her,I think she was in trouble, not dealing with the heat very well,or being crushed by the crowd..either way. The band didn't really know what was going on and they were supposed to play another song lol. Definitely a career defining moment for U2 and cementing Bono as a top tier frontman.

Their set was so long because the producers kept signalling not to stop. U2 had the audience so captivated that one of the producers said they were desperate to keep them on stage for fear the audience would freak out & rush the stage. And you could see in the video that there were some issues already right in front.

U2 was popular, but that performance made them absolutely explode globally. Deservedly so.

The thing with the crowd crush and him "saving" is that he is obviously causing the press forward to be worse by his actions, as the crowd don't know, they just surge forward to also get closer. He was saving her from his own actions ultimately. Crowd control and security were out of their depth.

Apparently the rest of the band weren't happy with Bono for jumping into the audience because they had other songs to play but couldn't because he took up too much time as all Live Aid performers were given a certain amount of time on stage. Queen probably stole the show with their set but U2' s Bad for me was the stand out from the Wembley show.

They and REM were the kings of College Radio up to that point here in the States (This footage is from Wembley, so the UK audience was more aware, although 16 year old me knew them well), but this was the performance that started to catapult them into the stratosphere, which was quickly followed up with the Joshua Tree and the rest is history.

I’m 60 years old and have seen U2 over 30 times, but watching this live was was so awesome. Not just U2, but Queen, The Who and so many others, but U2 stole the show too me! Introduced to them while serving in the Air Force in England 81-83!

There was about 80,000 of us in Wembley Stadium that day, it was Epic! U2 we’re still relatively unknown by most people, but they did put on a great set, Queen were the kings of the day, but U2 came a close 2nd for me. It was an unforgettable day, being in that crowd with 4 Friends that love ‘Live’ music was unbelievable. 😎😎😎

When Bono jumped off the stage, the rest of the band literally had no idea where he was or what he was doing. The story goes that the rest of the band wanted to fire Bono after this. Then the reviews started to come in, and, the rest, as they say, is history.

Totally share your joy for U2 but just to be clear, during many performances of "Bad", Bono "hauled" a woman out of the crowd, such as at Live Aid, with nothing to do with audience members being "crushed" as you mention.

Queen were active in the 80s so that precludes U2 from being the best. Far better singer, guitarist, dummer and bass guitarist and also far better and more imaginative and varied songs. Watch them at Live Aid and also Wembley. U2 never had the impact of Queen.
