These were two important players from the 90s. Both had their problems on & off the court. Yet both were able to play good tennis and win occasional big matches.

Two of my favourites 💚This, by the way, was their Quarter Final match. Also, it's quite amusing as these two tennis dynamos were both ranked as high as World No. 3 (both in Singles & in Doubles] and they're both Grand Slam champions too. Amazing 🙌

Two of my favorite players of all-time (both should have won far more slams) and both were great personalities for the sport.

I bet Sabatina didn't know what had hit her! She was lucky (but did play very well) to get through this. No woman, even Monica, had hit with this kind of sheer brutality off the ground at this point. Mary was heralding what was to come although her groundies still look ferocious 30 years later! She was also playing with a heavy pro staff and wasnt exactly made of muscle at this point, so shows how naturally strong an 18 year old Mary was.

mary pierce, one of the first of the modern players. big baseline hitting, not net game. stays on the baseline even when the opponent is scrambling. you'd struggle to find any modern player with gaby's skills and all court game.

Gaby’s hand skills at the net were so amazing! I think she had the best volleys and was the hardest to pass of any of her peers. Her hands were so good that she could serve and volley on a very modest serve on set point in the tiebreak against such a fine returner and still aggressively find a way to win the point with her athleticism and hand skills. Gaby handled the big hitters fairly well. She struggled more than not with Steffi and Monica but so did everyone else. Makes you wonder what she could have achieved if she attacked more and mixed in a lot more serve and volley play into her game.

Mary made the mistake of dating and almost marrying baseball hall of famer Roberto Alomar, thank God she broke it off.

Omg I love their handshake/extended hug. Gabby is so compassionate and empathetic, and Mary prob felt this, appreciated it, and acknowledged it back. Anyway it would only be a couple of years before Mary would win her Aussie title in dominant fashion.

I knew Mary and her brother David when she lived and trained at Harry Hopman/SADDLEBROOK in Florida. Both were nice kids. Her dad could be nice too although he went a little wacko sometimes. Mary was one of the all time greatest teen tennis phenoms. I’m glad she made the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Mary Pierce could've given Seles a fight in the semifinals than Sabatini.

This isn't a semifinal. Must have been a quarterfinal. Sabatini played Seles in the semi.
