If WordPerfect for OS/2 was anything like WordPerfect for Windows 3.x, then I’m quite sure it was never anyone’s favorite version of WordPerfect. Any of the version 5 series for MS-Dos was MUCH better, and within the Windows environment WinWord was MUCH better. I remember the Windows version of WordPerfect came with a file manager that was more feature-rich and useful than the stock Windows offering, but like WordPerfect for Windows itself, it had a user interface that was shared by absolutely nothing else.

Brings back memories. When I was in the army, they had an office where you could use the computers, learn software, take some classes etc, and someone had installed 3D studio (before Max came out), on a machine running OS2. I had a blast creating 3d animations and have tinkered with graphics ever since.

You mean OS2 warp ? The one that was so warped the creator's sold it to us regardless if they knew it was crap and took like 3 grand GBP anyway ?
Yeah good hoodwink mr gates and IBM,
IBM, solutions for a small planet ? Solutions on how to fleece and screw people who spent thousands .......bit like a covid vaccine that mr gates held the patent to 30 years ago.
Omg how big business screws us all and gets away with it

I logged in just to like this video. Used OS/2 exclusively for many years, from 2.1 to eComStation 1.1. A trip down memory lane.

Interesting video Michael. Even more interesting when one goes to your twitter page and reads what turns out to be a baseless and completely unnecessary attack on your video. I tend to agree with your assessment of the situation. While certainly they have every right to want to protect their proprietary software, they really should be doing that with a bit more tact and legal knowledge of their own EULA. Maybe actually watch the video before assuming the worst. This was actually a thoughtful and fun look at yet another OS that existed before the Monolith known as Microsoft Windows came into being. I agree with some of the comments in your twitter feed stating that a follow-up video to this explaining the entire "fiasco" in finer detail might be interesting. Thank you for all you do, and cheers!

IBM should not have stopped OS/2 development. They should have continued to fix the issues and improve the GUI and user friendliness. The lost confident after seeing MS Windows interface. But if they have continued, then definitely it become a strong competitor.

WordPerfect being sold for $500 in 1992 would be the equivalent of having a retail price of $1,100 today! No wonder WordPerfect lost their #1 status so quickly! And they dared to bring an "anti-trust" lawsuit against Microsoft citing "unfair pricing"?? They were out of their minds!

Linux isn't that great. I used Linux for several years until a Ubnutu distribution update crashed. Then 2 or 3 updates to fix the first update also crashed and screwed up the boot loader. I tried for hours to find a fix and finally went back to windows, which I found had finally improved enough to be stable and relativity fast. I'm very happy using Windows 10 and see no reason to go back to Linux. Before Linux I had been using OS/2, until IBM did one of their corporate makeovers and abandoned the personal computer market. I had over $1000 invested in OS/2 programs , which for me was a lot at the time. IBM came so close to killing windows. I'll never trust that company again. Now that I'm retired, when winter rolls around and I can't do stuff outside, I might try messing around with ArcaOS. I still have all my OS/2 software.

I love vintage software made by companies that are now long gone like WordPerfect, or the loser of the first browser war, the old Netscape Navigator. There's definitely some sort of hauntology to it all, where it almost feels like a glimpse into some alternate timeline where computing went down a different path...

ArcaOS 5.1 is complete and ready for release. The holdup is really related to our distribution system, which is based on the WooCommerce platform.

While WooCommerce is a capable ecommerce solution, Arca Noae’s requirements to be able to allow ordering of a personalized ISO have now become considerably more complicated than they were for the 5.0 release in 2017. Instead of only spinning the same ISO with personalization data for each customer, we now must continue to have 5.0 ISOs available, and offer 5.1 ISOs in several languages. In addition, instead of maintaining one subscription channel for ArcaOS, we now must maintain two separate channels, one for 5.0 and one for 5.1. Upgraders will also need to change subscription channels when they upgrade ArcaOS. This work has proven more complicated than we had anticipated.

In the meantime, we have taken steps to upgrade our infrastructure to expand our capacity to build and warehouse more ISOs, and we are now at a point where the missing pieces of the puzzle are just the software enhancements for the website to bring everything together.

We have always avoided stating narrow windows for anticipated delivery dates, and take great efforts to avoid the appearance of vaporware. ArcaOS 5.1 is real, and it is coming…soon.

In the interim (and after the release of ArcaOS 5.1), ArcaOS 5.0 will continue to receive critical updates and support, and from time to time, we may even release new bugfix ISOs for ArcaOS 5.0 (generally when an update impacts the installation experience).

We appreciate everyone’s continued patience. We want to bring you ArcaOS 5.1 as much as you want it!
