The Ukrainian attack on Russian strategic forces is a very worrying development and highlights a massive breakdown in the entire NATO structure that has profound impact on the USA and Russia and threatens to destroy what must be just about the last element of the SALT treaties, the New START treaty.
Under the treaty which limits the air component of the nuclear triad to 700 warheads on both sides, all operational aircraft of the strategic forces must be stationed openly on airbases nominated by the host nations so that they can be satellite monitored by both sides and the USA and Russia both guarantee to protect each others strategic aircraft from attack. This is why both nations keep their aircraft out in the open, you will find US B2 and B52 stationed in exactly the same way at their airbases.
What is worse is that the Ukrainian president has displayed satellite images that can be identified as being actual images from the treaty monitoring intelligence images from the US side.
Where this goes depends on the USA and Russia but we could now be seeing the end of the treaty which will probably see the retirement of the TU95 and B52 and a return to dispersed and vastly more numerous strategic strike forces that use smaller aircraft that can be secretly located much closer to national borders.
Their has been muck debate both in Russia and the USA about the vulnerability to attack of these strategic forces the the ability of both parties the to guarantee each others forces from outside attack.
NATO is clearly no longer able to function properly and the USA has lost it's ability to police NATO forces worse still, classified US defense intelligence images turned up in Ukraine, not even a NATO nation, a major breakdown of the US intelligence community.
I should imagine this is going to free Russia perusing the treaty and they will be free to do what many in Russia want and transfer their air launch nuclear forces to large numbers of dispersed and protected supersonic aircraft armed with hypersonic long-range nuclear missiles that can be activated at short notice and hidden from view and not limited to just 700 units.
If this is where the west and particularly the USA want to go then that is fine but speed of deployment, small size of aircraft and large scale dispersed assets is going to be the future of nuclear forces and large stealth bombers like the B2 and B21 are just going to be a liability and waste of money in this new world order, way better to disperse the nuclear strike force throughout your air force using identical assets to those used for tactical operations rendering your strategic forces nearly impossible to identify.
