It's an Omen of stagnation. These poor dudes are clearly aberrations caused by a mistake in the Erdtree birthing process. When they appear a change needs to happen.

Those cutaneous horns are something else holy shit.. Something about it triggers a deep sense of disgust in me.

So godwyn being represented with vines after his soul was eradicated is because vines are treated as weeds/parasites and it makes sense as the deathroot is basically corrupting the erdtree. The amount of depth this game's lore has is insane!

The very first enemy you can possibly face in Elden Ring is the "Grafted Scion". Now I realize that the name isn't just something random, but rather a subtle hint towards the grand truth of the Erdtree's nature. Stunning work.

The misbegotten being vaguely draconic...
Placidusax being the previous Elden Lord...
The Erdtree being the Marika's tree....
All taken together shows that the Greattree, who when culled became the Crucible, was the Tree of the previous Queen of the Elden Ring (aka the previous god) who was lost (aka dead) and the former wife of Placidusax.
And that GodQueen was the Gloam-Eyed Queen.

Just a weird tangential, possibly meaningless thought; don't the Blade Of Calling and Black Knife have shapes reminiscent of pruning instruments?

My father showed me rootgrafting and yet most of this flew completely over my head. Thank you for deepening my appreciation for ER.

I've come to the conclusion that the Greater Will is just this terrible alchemist who cannot produce what he promises and does everything within his power to hide the flaws of his craft.

So did godwin get grafted to the roots? And all that that implies

is there any connection between Godwyn's Death Blight and the Omen's fire? They sure do look very similar

Well now I finally know why the Ancient Dragons' lightning is red. Because they are of the original Great Tree or of the Crucible, the color of which was red.
