I lived the exact same story with 2 baby squirrels in about 1955. They lived in a space provided in our house as well as a giant oak tree just outside our house. They are loving little creatures and a lot smarter than many people I have known.

Ahhh not fair. So cute would love one but....... I live in New Zealand...none of these mammals exist here. It's why many birds lost their ability to fly as they took over the forest floor etc where these mammals would exist. Eg kiwi, kaka, pukeko, and the giant parrot the Takahi. Just as well I get owned by cats.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

We raised a baby squirrel from the day it was born, umbilical cord still attached and after a couple of years she eventually re-wilded herself and she lives a few hundred yards from our house. We see her every so often and it's so special and I'm so proud to get her back to the wild and know she's able to fend for herself. It's so nice when she comes back to visit 🥰Props to this pair for looking after this squirrel so well!

Squirrels can make great pets, but are unsuitable for running free inside the home; they are destructive.

The more he played with her, the more attached she became to him. He became her social life. So of course it was impossible to set her free as a wild animal.

She's not going anywhere. Treat her with love and compassion. Find a vet that will care for her, and she will live for 15 years or more.
Be cognizant of the diseases that their wild relatives carry in your neighborhood, and vaccinate them from those problems. Keep them at their healthy weight, or even just under, and wild animals will have good joint and bone health. Keep them moving. I take my Green Cheeked Conure outside with her harness on, and the enrichment it gives their lives keeps their little brains stimulated.

Everything I see you doing with your Grey Sqjirrel isthe perfect life for a squirrel.

One question? : When you're outside with your squirrel, do distracted humans completely miss the fact that you have a squirrel on your shoulder?
I'd say 1 in 10 or 1 in 15 people notice my Green Cheeked Conure sitting on my shoulder??? Most times they're engrossed in their phone or listening to their headphones. It is really shocking to see. The people who do notice my parrot, are always amazed that there are harnesses made for birds or squirrels?

Have a great day!

We had a pet shop Squirrel named Suzy. She comes and goes as she pleases. We had English and Black walnuts in The pantry. If she came at Supper, I could Not eat until I gave her a nut. If I gave she a Black Walnut , I would have to crack It open or she would Not stop complaining. After a Few Yrs, she disappeared for about a month. Our patio screen has a hole at the bottom The size of a softball. 1 Day, here she comes with All 6 of her kids. They ran around in the living and dining room. Never the kitchen or bedrooms? They never damage anything, very well behaved! Better than human beings.

Aww how cute! I have a very young squirrel who comes around everyday that I would love to train him in this way. I feed him a variety of nuts and dried fruits and he'll sit pretty on his hind legs when I feed him. There's a couple things I'm cautious about...1 is getting bit if I try to hold him. And the 2nd is that he piddles everywhere. When he walks or scurries around he is always dribbling a little. I'm sanitizing those areas on the picnic table several times a day! He climbs up my back and I sure hope he's not piddling when he does that!. Any suggestions?
