Kratom helped a relative who has in the past reverted back to hard addictions (meth in particular). I couldn't recommend it to most people, but... occasionally it has its uses.

FWIW: He uses it when a craving sets in, not regular prolonged use. Do NOT treat it like cigarettes or even CBD. Sparing use as necessary.

NIH-backed review finds kratom far safer than its critics claim

This National Institute of Health NIH-highlighted systematic review, titled

“A systematic review of (pre)clinical studies on the therapeutic potential and safety profile of kratom in humans,”
examined kratom’s safety profile in humans — and the findings directly challenge many of the worst-case claims.

According to the review:
“Evidence of severe psychosis and electrocardiogram (ECG) alterations was found to be not related to kratom use. Additionally, kratom was not found to have a negative impact on life quality, nor causing any alterations of hepatic or other biochemical parameters, hormone levels, social functioning in a traditional setting, motor function, and cognitive profile concerning attention, working memory, and executive functions.”

KRATOM use was NOT ASSOCIATED with:

•Severe psychosis

•Heart rhythm problems (ECG changes)

•Liver or organ damage

•Hormone disruption

•Motor skill impairment

•Cognitive problems (attention, memory, executive function)

•Lower quality of life

•Social withdrawal in traditional use settings

Another data set showing why consumers — and scientists — are calling for research, not restrictions.

FDA Scientist Publishes Kratom Safety and Abuse Potential Report

A safety analysis by FDA scientist Dr. Jack E. Henningfield, Ph.D. concluded that kratom has low abuse potential and low dependence liability, with no sufficient evidence of harm to justify scheduling under the Controlled Substances Act.
The report, titled “Kratom Abuse Potential 2021: An Updated Eight Factor Analysis,” was peer-reviewed by the NIH and published in Frontiers in Pharmacology—a journal indexed by the National Library of Medicine.
Key findings from the report:
“Kratom has a low potential for abuse and a low dependence liability. There is insufficient evidence of personal harm, adverse health effects, or detriment to public health to warrant control under the Controlled Substances Act.”
“Appropriate regulation of kratom under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act is the most effective way to protect public health—ensuring access and oversight while sustaining the overall very low adverse personal and public health effects associated with kratom consumption.”
About the author:
Dr. Jack Henningfield, Ph.D., served as a Special Government Employee with the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research and Center for Tobacco Products.
Former Chief of the Clinical Pharmacology Research Branch at the NIH’s National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).
Current Adjunct Professor of Behavioral Biology in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
He is internationally recognized for his work in drug abuse liability assessment and public health policy.

It has been my honor to testify alongside him at congressional briefings and Kratom, as well as international Kratom scientific symposium

What the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Says About Kratom

Dr. Nora Volkow, Director of NIDA, has consistently expressed a positive and science-driven perspective on kratom.

NIDA has invested over $100 million into kratom research.
Dr. Volkow believes kratom may be part of the solution for many.
Her personal private lab at NIDA is actively conducting research on kratom.

On December 13, 2023, she delivered a congressional briefing and recommended that kratom be regulated like other supplements, not scheduled as a controlled substance.

In September 2024, a letter from Dr. Volkow expressing her continued support for kratom research and thoughtful regulation was read into the official congressional record.
Kratom addictive? Here’s what NIDA’s own research says:

From the 2021 NIDA Director’s Report, authored by Dr. Nora Volkow, M.D.:

“Initial findings indicate mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine are not rewarding in the ICSS procedure. Present results suggest kratom alkaloids do not have abuse potential.”
Bottom line: NIDA’s findings do not support the idea that kratom is highly addictive — and the agency continues to prioritize research over prohibition.

Sadly the reason it ended up in gas stations is because the phamesudical companies refuse to regulate it. As soon as they found out it was helping people quite heroin they try to band it. Thankfully people rallied together and formed the American Kratom association and the DEA backed down. Also before anyone even tries to claim it's switching one addiction for another. I got off prescription opiates with Kratom and had no withdrawal when I stopped taking it. Now I don't take anything at all and feel great. Kratom saved me from a life of addiction.

Sometimes Cornette makes me embarassed to be a fan of Cornette. His opinion is fine, love that he can say what he thinks (regardless if I agree), but speaking down on someone because they have knowledge of chemistry that you don't reminds me alot of what happened 5 years ago. Too informed?...Seems fishy...uninformed? Leave it the experts. But then they would be too informed. Crazy. Reminds me of the dialogue (or lack thereof) that was going on around...well thats better left unsaid... and that didn't turn out well for anyone. Oh well.

Now back to bashing AEW!

If youve done real opiods and kratom, you know there is a tremendous difference. They act on the same receptors but not in the exact way, allowing kratom to have far less addictive potential. But it certainly can be addictive if done daily.

Ive only ever used the normal powder

Jim and Brian, Kratom leaves and powder is different from 7-Oh. Kratom did help a lot and I didn't have withdrawals coming off of it. I made the mistake of trying to 7 oh and has sent me down a spiral again. It doesn't get you as high like oxycontin but it gives you a good feeling and it takes the pain away. What is highly addictive I recommend people do not try it. It is nothing like the regular kratom.

I honestly thing the whole argument shouldn't be about whether kratom is okay or not okay. The whole discussion should be about why would you let someone who needs these sort of drugs to have a match even have that match in the 1st place. It isn't like cortisone shots for bad knees.

in 1959 a major league pitcher pitched a perfect game for 13 innings in Milwaukee before finally giving up a run and losing in the 14th inning. Nowadaze no pitcher can make it beyond 7-8 innings tops. NFL players lasted much, much longer on average than they do nowadaze as well. The better things are purported to be the worse they become as far as science and mortal man is concerned.
